When I heard Tom's dad was hit by a car, my immediate reaction was: Death needs lasik - he went after the wrong Tom.

Won't miss that turncoat asshole one bit.

Eli - you'll be happy to know that in this video - http://www.cnn.com/video/data/2.0/video/… - CNN now includes Mount Rainier.

I am getting sick of all the analogies the media are using to help us pinheads understand just...how...hard...the...search...is. It's like finding a suitcase...from a mountaintop...in the dark! It's like finding a desktop computer...in Los Angeles! It's like locating a tick...on the underside of your balls...from a step ladder...with sidesweep sonar!

They have sonar. They have the pings. This is nothing like the Titanic, which predated the technology they're using. It's also not like Air France 447, where they never detected any pings. The search is hard, but exaggerating its difficulty is insulting to the skilled engineers out there conducting what has turned out to be a very effective search. Who out there thought after one week that they'd have this strong of a bead on where to search after just a month? They're already light years ahead of the flight 447 search.

I believe they're going to find the black boxes within months at the most, and I'm still optimistic that the recorders will exonerate the pilots. It seems like an awfully long way to go to commit suicide.

@8 - I'm with you. In today's gerrymandered political environment, the ACA is a stunning achievement. He also deserves plenty of credit for winding down the Iraq debacle and for overseeing the end of the hunt for Bin Laden, the prize W. took his eye off of. And let's not forget the significance of being the first black president: as a pioneer, he's enduring the obstructionism and unjustified hatred of the Republicans - no small feat in and of itself.

@5 - at least it will have your sense of humor to keep it company.

Johnson's record almost makes up for his conspiring with the CIA and Cuba to assassinate JFK.
Apr 7 Centrists Rule the World today commented on Maybe Tom Daley Didn't Say He Was Gay?.
@9 - I get where you're coming from, but in terms of helping people accept alternative sexualities, it doesn't matter whether Tom is gay or bi - either one shakes up the hetero-normative bias, right? So the only reason to care is if you want to question bisexuality. Full disclosure: I have often found myself skeptical of certain sexualities, and then i realized it truly is not my place. It makes no difference to my life if someone says they're bisexual and later turns out to be 100% gay. Or if a woman who says she's a lesbian later marries a man (see: Heche, Anne). I suppose if I were with someone who left me when they changed their mind, that would suck, but that's a matter of sizing up the individual. Categories don't matter.

So back to the original point: why parse Tom Daley's sexual identity? Why not just be supportive of someone who's said: I am no longer pretending to be heterosexual?

Maybe we need to all stop worrying about what buckets people fall into? I mean, I get that invisibility is bad, but by the same token, hyper-sensitivity makes it seem like everyone's sexual identity is everyone else's business. And you know what: it's really not. Do we need to know who's into who so we can be prepared for unwanted advances? That's always a risk, even if everyone labeled themselves clearly. Is it just morbid curiosity? There are also confused people out there who probably don't know exactly what their sexual identity is.

Anyway, the Tom Daley audiotape isn't the Zapruder film, so I'm going to go back to not giving a flying fuck if he's precisely gay or bisexual. Be whatever you want, Tom, and be at peace with whoever you are.
Apr 7 Centrists Rule the World today commented on The Percentage of Americans Who Worry "A Great Deal" About Climate Change.
It looks like there's been a steady increase in concern since 2011, so I'm not sure this poll is evidence of people not caring. The fact that it increased at all in 2014, a year in which everyone keeps saying: "But it's cold outside!" is encouraging.
Apr 3 Centrists Rule the World today commented on Actor James Franco Hits on a Teenage Girl?.
UPDATE: Saw a picture of the girl/woman in question. She is gorgeous. Stunningly beautiful. She does not look 17. She is most definitely in New York with her mum.

Sooooooo...I'm officially not outraged, except by the fact she baited him into sending her a picture and then shared the whole thing publicly. I'll also be annoyed if it turns out to be a promo for his movie. If it is, they went a long way to make it seem real - especially the pic of her with her mom in NYC. Seems far-fetched. She flirted, he took the bait, she decided that was worth posting to the world.

A man responded to an attractive girl who direct messaged him and he didn't run fleeing when she turned out to be 17.9 years old? Oh my god - what a sleazeball. Not his best moment (he should have stopped talking to her when he found out she was 17, and I can't believe he needs to chase someone staying in a hotel with their mum - a little desperate much?), but I'm having a tough time mustering moral outrage.
