I miss my mom, who died in 1988.
Can I make a plug to name your next daughter "Macle"? Soft "c" , long "a". May-sull, accent on the first syllable.
It is pretty, unusual (I have never met another Macle in my entire life), and actually means something -- she was from Arkansas, which has a lot of diamond mining. Googling her name years after she died turned up this factoid -- it means a twinned crystal.
Anybody want to name their kid Macle? You will be original!

I'm IN Oklahoma right now and it is overwhelming, all the Duck merchandise. Good lord. Beards and the word Duck EVERYWHERE for Christmas.
What do the Chinese think of us, I wonder.

Born in 1954.
Hadn't realized the hating on boomers was so widespread.
I'm feeling a little sad now.
How is that for an honest interaction?
PS I agree that this person is clueless about life in general, but I don't lay it to being a boomer. It's just them.

Rob, I didn't say that the millions will qualify for medicaid -- I said the millions are for the subsidies.
And it is dang easy -- when most of your assets are in tax deferred accounts, and your non-income producing home, and stocks that focus on growth not income that you can sell for cash to live on -- to have very little income.
And I'm progressive, by the way. It isn't a right wing fantasy. It is reality.
I do taxes for a living, and I am already thinking about how to help my clients (and myself) minimize income to qualify for subsidies. Accelerated depreciation. Traditional IRA instead of Roth IRA. Fully funding an HSA account. Maximize retirement deductions from the paycheck. Never sell stocks with a gain, unless the gain is so huge it will more than offset the subsidy lost. 1031 exchanges -- where you trade investment property instead of selling it -- will now become much more desirable. All the tools of the solidly middle class to minimize income for tax purposes will now be used to minimize income to get some pretty serious subsidies.
I don't know what percentage of folks will be able to milk the subsidy system, but I guarantee you it is going to happen.
As a tax preparer, it is my duty to my clients to help them minimize their tax burden (and the subsidy is essentially a tax refund.) I'll do it, because the system allows for it. But it does bother me.

Here's one thing I am uncomfortable about with the new medicaid -- there is no asset test.
So you can have buttloads of assets, but if they aren't income earning, or are low income producing, you can get free medical care.
I'm not comfortable with that. I have a friend who wants to start a support group -- Trust Fund Babies on Medicaid. It's a weird situation to be in.
The subsidies are the same -- you can have millions in assets but if your income is low, you qualify for huge subsidies.

1. When I first saw the story, I thought -- she is making it up. It was too much like other stories, with folks who ended up getting big money from strangers who were outraged.
2. When I was in 9th grade, I had a friend who lied all the time. I would share her stories with my mom, who finally said -- are you sure she is telling the truth? Finally, one day she told a whopper that was easily disproved. When I asked her why she lied, she said, "I wanted to sound interesting." It was very sad. And I felt profoundly betrayed. I don't know if our friendship would have survived -- I moved soon afterwards.
3. I actually feel better about this woman, knowing that she is pathologically lying, and is obviously not well, rather than just a consciously opportunist scumbag, out to play on the feelings of others for her own benefit.

So there can be no socialism, according to the logic presented here.
Because unfortunately racism is indeed universal. And selected for evolutionarily.
It will be interesting to read how the holy heck you think that racism can be made extinct.
I wish it were possible, but I don't see how. Fearful people aren't interested in letting go of their fear, aren't interested in being educated out of it. What are you going to do -- lock them up? Strap them down and force feed them tolerance?
