commented on Listen: KUOW's Special Report on Life and Eviction in The Jungle
I know nothing about camps but I'm very well informed about homelessness in general. The first thing people don't know about is how invisible most homeless people are and how many of them desperately cling to employment and any semblance of a normal life. (YES! many homeless people have jobs and try to work hard, save money, etc.)
The bums you see pan handling are not always homeless, and everything on the signs they display is probably a lie. They aren't veterans, don't have diseases and weren't victims of a natural disaster. They are lying, thieving, heroin addicts and meth users who deserve nothing but a chance to go to inpatient treatment when they are ready.
This crisis is the direct result of mollycoddling the real estate development industry for decades while lavishing free giveaways on big money special interests and wealthy individuals, and attacking unions, workers rights, and the social safety net. It will take a very long, hard political struggle to fix it. Just because we win this year (Not a done deal yet!) is no reason to slack off after the victory parties. It won't be over, ever.

commented on The Way We Used to Look
I used to read all the free papers, and loved the Stranger at first sight. I remember all the fictitious lonely heart ads in the first issue. I would always buy the PI and pick up the SGN and the boy I loved would get the Times and the Rocket. We got the WSJ delivered in those days, now I hate them LOL. I don't miss the black ink on my hands. The only paper I get delivered now is the NYT, everything else is electronic or I am so mad at them I just don't read it at all.

#14 yes, you'll find that credit unions offer a much better deal in all sorts of ways. Paper check fraud is as common as dirt now and happens every hour of every day and comes in an infinite variety of scams targeting individuals, banks, businesses, and even the government. White male strangers bearing checks can expect the same treatment or worse.

commented on The Stranger Is Rescinding Its Endorsement of Erin Jones and Will Back Chris Reykdal in the General Election
I decided to vote for Chris Reykdal based on the issues. The first time I met him I asked what he thought of the state supreme court ruling against charter schools and he said the court got it right. First time I heard Jones she was going on and on about how she was adopted by a rich white couple and educated in Europe at elite private schools and attended college at ivy league universities etc. and little about OSPI except that she works there. She has improved her spiel a lot since then but "LIFESTYLE" ??? Fooey! glad the Stranger belatedly got it right.

commented on Pramila Jayapal Lands Congressman Adam Smith's Endorsement in the Race for the 7th
I got to meet Pramila last Saturday at the Snohomish County Democrats quarterly meeting, Brady was also there and both gave nice speeches. (I have endorsed Brady Walkinshaw but can't vote for him since I now live in the second district. ) Senator Maralyn Chase gave a speech for Pramila Jayapal and Rep. June Robinson made a lively and convincing case for Brady. Even though the room seemed to have plenty of people, we didn't have a quorum so couldn't formally endorse them. We're lucky to have such good, progressive people.
