@44: Actually I have taken environmental science classes. Have you? Have you taken a no-shit science class that discusses climate? You know, one that has math, calculations, feedback cycles, etc.? Can you tell me the major feedback cycles involved with CO2? Can you tell me the largest sinks and sources? Can you even tell me where limestone comes from? If not, then shut the fuck up. I don't care if you respect me or not, but the grown ups are talking and you need to go sit at the kids table.

@42: Two issues:

#1. Current designs actually emit a considerable amount of CO2. I can imagine a design that does not, but that doesn't mean that it is practical.
#2. Current designs are limited due to drilling technology. This is a place where I think we need to put a considerable amount of research funding.

I don't have anything against geothermal power, but I don't see it as currently being the One True Solution To All Of Our Problems (TM). If there are feasible competitive designs, then I'll support them. But the current technology isn't that impressive.

@35: Oh, and did you know that cooling towers are actually designed to protect the environment from the waste heat? A nuclear plant that wants to fuck the environment wouldn't build cooling towers and would just drop the waste heat back into a river. And did you realize that cooling towers are not a feature solely confined to nuclear plants? Any power plant that emits too much heat for the environment to take it will be required to build cooling towers (which is why they aren't required to be built on power plants near large lakes or oceans).

Cooling towers aren't a technical requirement, they are an environmental requirement.

@35:
If a cooling tower had been installed near Deception Pass, we might very well be feeling a similar impact as those in Fukushima, Japan now, and with no hope of ever again getting back what would be irretrievably gone forever.
You do realize the Fukushima plant didn't have cooling towers, right? Not that this would have mattered, since you obviously have no idea what they do.

I may not know much about nuclear physics, but I DO know quite a bit about local history.
That is awesome. But if you don't know shit about physics, then you should shut the fuck up. Morons like you who think they can comment on science or engineering without ever learning about science and engineering are the same people responsible for inventing shit like breatherism, homeopathy, and anti-vaccine scares.

tl;dr: I'm calling you ignorant.

@29:

1. No, Hanford was a nuclear weapons research laboratory. It is not a nuclear power plant. Take your own advice and "If you don't believe me, look it up, provided you know how to read."
2. Do you know what the function of a cooling tower is? Can you even describe what a heat engine is?

You are a moron. You are hopelessly outmatched in this conversation. I have a degree in physics and I have worked in electrical generation. You really don't stand a chance, so I would recommend you fuck off and let the grown-ups talk.

Ha ha! David Simon is now considering reversing himself:

All of you bootlickers (sirkowski being the biggest one) just lost your best excuse.

@19: Fuck you for attacking someone for having a mental illness. I doubt you'd do the same for diabetes.

Sadly, the rest of your points I have to agree with. Democratic fanatics here are defending an abysmal intrusion of privacy and are pretending to wave the "national security" flag. It makes me sick.

CNET also just dropped a bombshell where Rep. Nadler told them that during a classified briefing that the NSA admitted that they listen to phone calls without warrants.

@22: It has not been confirmed that there is a natural nuclear reactor inside the Earth's core. Radioactive decay and accretion energy are enough to explain the current heat transfer to the surface as well as the temperature gradients throughout the volume of the planet. And the reason the Earth stays hot is because of the surface to volume ratio.
