Many states have laws that say voluntary intoxication is not a defense. Not sure if Washington is one.

I read the transcripts of the arguments today and some of the things Ginsburg, Sotomayor and Kagan pointed out showed how ridiculous Texas was being in their arguments. (There is a 28 times more risk in having a colonoscopy versus an abortion - Ginsburg seemed to like that one!) However, it seems the conservatives were trying to get it remanded back to the District Court for more evidentiary hearings or punt on procedural grounds. Regardless, it is a new tax year and a good reminder to start your charitable donations by donating to places like Planned Parenthood or the Center for Reproductive Rights who argued this case today in front of SCOTUS.

I pre-ordered the book and started reading it last night. I could not put it down. This book is powerful. It is balanced, thoughtful, emotional and incredibly thought provoking. As a criminal defense attorney I have already recommended it to a prosecutor friend who is going to read it. I think being from Seattle it is even a little more interesting since Eli does such a great job of not only making you feel like you know the people involved, but his descriptions of the area allows you to picture it all clearly, I hope this book starts a conversation that has been needed for a long time. I will definitely being recommending it to as many people as I can. And although I have not finished the book yet I hope everyone involved has found some semblance of peace in their lives.

Watching Brendan confess is very similar to Jason M. confessing in the West Memphis 3 case

As a career criminal defense attorney I could write about this subject forever. There are great public defenders, and then there are some who shouldn't be allowed In the courtroom. We know who the bad cops are - try getting rid of them or a prosecutor to believe you. The imbalance of the system when witnessed close up is sickening. Look at the budgets of prosecutors and law enforcement compared to defense offices. Also, the Reid method is still used and taught. Some agencies also use voice stress analysis that has proven to be junk - but as long as it gets a confession they don't care. And unlike on tv, in many states children do not have the right to have a parent present when questioned by the police. This is an interesting documentary, but sadly many of the pieces of it ring true.

@2 When I was in undergrad at UW I was told it was the same bricks used in some prisons so if prisoners got out of hand they could hose them down and they would have a hard time standing. Your UW lore seems to make perfect sense.

@35 If she can't crowdfund then can she just accept donations that she has not solicited to pay her fines?
Sep 3, 2015 jwlsesq commented on Federal Judge Orders Kim Davis Jailed for Refusing to Issue Marriage Licenses to Same-Sex Couples.
@8 The Legislature would either have to call a special session or wait until the new term starts and then commence impeachment proceedings to remove her from office. Members of the Legislature have said since all but three clerks in Kentucky are issuing the licenses they do not want to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars for a special session so they will wait until they normally start.

I also read the reason the judge did not fine has, as was requested, was because she testified that she had people calling her office every day offering her money. The judge figured her supporters would just pay any monetary sanctions which is one of the reasons he put her in jail.

I am having a green burial. It involves a cedar handmade casket with a cotton mat inside and rope handles. You are buried in a certified green cemetery (Greenacres - Ferndale, WA) and your body and the casket naturally returns to the earth. Your headstone is an engraved river rock and you can choose a flowering type plant to be placed on top. There are no pesticides or herbicides used in the area so lots of little wildlife and very calm and peaceful.
