To Avoid Rape, "Try not to show fear.".
@127
I agree with you. I think either extreme by itself will never succeed, and both together have the best shot at making a real difference. In that line of thinking, condemning a good-faith effort from law enforcement to give some practical advice is not a great decision.

This is pathetic. The people posting this advice are trying to help, and you've decided to shit on them because they've had the integrity to approach a subject that you're pissed off about. And since you know that no rapist will ever care about your anger, you're lashing out at whoever is willing to stand around and take the abuse.
The worst possible response against defeatist fatalism ("we'll never stop rape, so let's just let women deal with the problem") is irresponsible idealism ("don't take precautions because you shouldn't have to"). You're picking the latter argument because you want to impugn that the police are taking the former position. Be angry, but don't be stupidly indignant.
Look, we get it: women SHOULD NOT HAVE TO constantly be on the guard against rape. People shouldn't have to guard against any type of crime, whether it's robbery, swindling, violence, bias attacks, etc. But until this barbaric world is the way it should be, lock your house, don't leave your keys in the car, watch your money, be alert on the street. There are monsters out there - thousands and thousands of them. They don't give a shit about how the world should be. They are a cowardly lot and they look for easy targets. Don't be one.

I'm a Supporter of Physician-Assisted Suicide....
There's no question that euthanasia will eventually claim lives for the wrong reasons (treatable depression, manipulation from family members, and so on). I think it's likely that a greater number of lives will be defiled with horrible, demeaning, agonizing deaths if we do NOT permit euthanasia under any circumstances.
Some people luck into a good life. Most people have to work for it, and sometimes they still don't achieve it; sometimes our very efforts to obtain a good life are what make us miserable. Despite these unfortunate outcomes, we should still have the option to try, since people who make no effort at all generally end up having a pretty miserable life.
The very same things can be said of an easy death.

What Progressives Need to Understand About Gun Control.
I actually became irrevocably 'not-anti-gun' way back in the 80s when politicians started talking about tattooing HIV positive people and putting them in camps. It affected me. I learned how to shoot and for a long time believed that every gay person had an obligation to learn how to operate a firearm.
What do I believe now? Well, I don't believe the average joe needs huge magazines or assault rifles. The more powerful a gun is, the higher the standard for qualified ownership should be. I also believe tyrants are always people of great principle (read: righty religious or lefty social idealists), and they are just around the corner, and that people should be able to own guns. Everything else is negotiable.
The said thing is that this position disgusts EVERYBODY. Sigh.
