Wasn't this in Tom Clancy's Patriot Games in 1987?

A bewildering and humiliating scene.

I am however looking forward to hearing Russell Brand on Richard Herring's Leicester Square Theatre Podcast later this week.
Jun 18 Warren Terra commented on War Reporter Michael Hastings, Dead at 33.
A terrible loss, and a brilliant if curtailed life.

Still, it's wrong to report that he "died". From LA Times version of the story:
Hastings was the victim of a single-car crash that occurred about 4:25 a.m. in the 600 block of North Highland Avenue
....
The vehicle crossed a median, struck a tree and burst into flames in the Hancock Park area, LAPD Officer Christopher No said. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
....
A witness described the accident to KTLA News: “I was just coming northbound on Highland and I seen a car, like, going really fast and all of a sudden I seen it jackknife,” Luis Cortez said. “I just seen parts fly everywhere, and I slammed on my brakes and stopped and tried to call 911."
That's not the end of a struggle with cancer. Unless he had a really freaky mechanical failure, that's someone driving in a manner likely to kill someone, and fortunately killing only themselves.

Jun 17 Warren Terra commented on Ivan & Alyosha's Gear Gets Stolen, Rhapsody Gives 'Em $10,000, but They Still Want Your Cash.
So, wait, they had a hundred grand or more of gear, a vehicle, and a trailer, uninsured (and I assume since no mention was made their automobile insurance doesnt meaningfully cover theft, even though this is definitely an option)? Truly awful news, but what the heck were they thinking? I feel nervous about leaving my crappy laptop in a strange hotel room, or in my car's trunk in a decent neighborhood (and insured), and they have a car and trailer full of massively expensive gear they don't bother to insure?

I feel for their pain, and it's great Amazon and Rhapsody have decided to give them money (not to mention anyone else who's done so), but can they use some of this money to buy the vaguest hint of a clue?

Actually, we've had 3D for a long time, and it's quite successful (2D image, plus play/rewind/fast-forward). You must mean 5D is where it's at.

Jun 9 Warren Terra commented on If That Former Green Beret and Iraq War Vet Had Been Armed He Could Have Protected Himself From....
@#9 There is no penalty for leaving guns around the house, loaded and ready to fire. We don't even have obvious free-market remedies - for instance, home insurers could require common-sense safe storage of guns to avoid huge increases in premiums.
Jun 5 Warren Terra commented on Why I Ride Fearlessly Without A Helmet.
Jesus. Fire this idiot from their unpaid gig; the concentrated levels of stupid are a danger to all around them. This post may be the dumbest thing I've read on the Internet all month, and I'm not entirely sure the relative youth of June makes a difference. Really just painfully bad.
Jun 2 Warren Terra commented on Half Price Books on Capitol Hill Is Closing Today.
I'm sure most every long-time book lover in Seattle has a story or two about the craziness of the proprietor of Twice Sold Tales - but (1) this news is about Half-Price Books; and (2) Twice-Sold Tales off Broadway was a truly great used bookstore before their location got bulldozed - although somehow the new place has never done it for me.
May 31 Warren Terra commented on After Earth: Possibly the Best Mediocre Sci-Fi Movie to Come Out This Year (So Far).
Manohla Dargis's review in The New York Times was cleverly titled A Father-Son Outing Goes Terribly Wrong. It's clear from the scathing assessment that she then delivers that the title is not merely meant to describe the plot. Given all the reasons to suspect this movie is terrible - Will Smith in a self-indulgent mode, nepotistic casting, awful costumes, heavy exposition, utter predictability, and of course M. Night himself - I'd rather trust her.
