Modern art is bankrupt.

@6, India is deeply segregated by caste, which is pretty much the same thing as race.

@4 is completely wrong; most of us do NOT live next to someone of another race. We are still a deeply segregated country, a country more segregated than many of the less-racially-tolerant ones above us on the scale.

American racism is scientific and judicial, not emotional and personal. It's incorrect to display racist attitudes in public, but our entire society is built on a system of racial preference. Our country was BUILT on racism: not just slavery (which economically benefited the north as well as the south), but the Homestead Act (almost entirely directed at whites), Social Security (deliberately crafted to exclude non-white workers), the GI Bill after WWII (all-white), and the entire banking system that built the country -- available only to whites.

So we don't have to be outwardly racially intolerant; our system does it for us.

@11, that's hilarious. Ballmer's typical dickhead antics "jeopardize the city's ability to secure an NBA team down the road". What an unmitigated asshole.

@22, and lest you think I'm obsessed with a dead man and the zombie-like Bezos, the real masters of evil are men like Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook, Eric Schmidt of Google, venture capitalist Peter Thiel, and the rest of the Silicon Valley oligarchy, who don't pay taxes, don't create jobs, and fuck over their communities and America as a whole in ways that Michelle Bachmann heartily approves of. They're cynical bastards, and they make the Robber Barons of the 1800s look like pikers. But everybody loves them.

The twist of lemon is to release a drop of lemon oil from the peel. It's a little hit of aroma and flavor. Seriously, how do you people not know this?

@22, besides the school-testing that Gates promotes, there's the matter of the economy-destroying aid that they provide. And how much of the money stays right there in that building, which cost, what, $500 million? Twice that? Uh-huh. But no, Gates is not in the same category as guys like Jobs and Bezos, who are straight-up sociopaths.

Bezos and Jobs are (or were) famously anti-charity. Jobs's idea of helping the poor was farting out a little dividend from Apple's world-record cash reserves to the shareholders. These people are not just enemies of the poor, they are enemies of the middle class.

@13, if you actually read the article, you would see that tech billionaires don't typically give anything to charity. Steve Jobs and Jeff Bezos are famous for it. They regard charity with the same contempt they regard the slaves who make their products or the peons who buy them. Even Bill Gates, who gives billions to charity, makes sure that the main beneficiaries are highly-paid administrators here in their spectacularly awful new HQ in Seattle.

@8, yes, but WHY two types of lid?

Interestingly, the place in Scottsdale, AZ that was all over the internet for their anti-customer freakout on Gordon Ramsay, Facebook, and Yelp, Amy's Baking, also refuses to let Hispanics in. The program apparently showed the guy refusing service to an Hispanic family. But then, in AZ, discrimination against Hispanics by Republicans is mandatory, not illegal.

@16, he wouldn't have been in any particular danger in Mexico. Probably safer than in the US. Well, couldn't have been worse -- he got killed in that notorious third-world violence hotspot, Oregon. Actually, American highways are more dangerous than just about anyplace you could mention. I mentioned the Darien Gap not because of murder or kidnap (it's a bit of a burgeoning tourist spot these days) but because it's physically impossible to walk through there. Or drive.
