gbrissey@thestranger.com

Grant Brissey has been writing for the Stranger—either on the staff or freelance—for almost a decade. In that time, he's covered everything from hard news and technology, to music, film, and visual arts.

Grant's work has also appeared at Geekwire, and in Billboard, Portland Mercury, San Francisco Weekly, San Francisco Bay Guardian, and the Seattle Weekly. He currently lives in the Green Lake neighborhood of Seattle and writes about dang near anything. He also does nerdy web site stuff, has played drums in multiple unsuccessful garage-rock bands, and runs Grantropolis.com.

Jeffrey Haynes, the mega-dreadlocked MC better known as Mr. Lif, has long been the ace up the sleeve of NYC's forward-thinking Definitive Jux collective. Combining one of the most distinctive tones since fellow Beantowner Guru with an intimidating intellect, Lif is the real deal.

It's like one of those high-school relationships. He's cute and smart (enough), but so goddamned earnest it sometimes makes your skin crawl. And you're not sure how much you like him coming up to you after school and playing his sweet, sad, and sometimes unbearably sincere songs for you with that pained look on his face.

Sounds like someone slipped some PCP into the crunk juice. Internet poster boy Danger Mouse's much-anticipated and heavily downloaded collaboration with Goodie Mob founder Cee-Lo sounds sane enough for a few minutes, what with #1 hit "Crazy"'s catchy bounce and plaintive vocals, but things start to get deliciously weird from there.

All aboard the stoner-rock express. Which is a flip way of alluding to Om's transporting qualities as well as bassist-vocalist Al Cisneros's and drummer Chris Hakius's rep as two-thirds of the innovating, all-the-bong-hits-all-the-time metal cultists Sleep.
