Today In Bands I Should've Been Listening to Since 2005

Posted by on Tue, Jun 23, 2009 at 2:19 PM

Smoke or Fire is one part Hot Water Music, one part Get Up Kids, and maybe a little Avail too. Basically, they're the 18-year-old version of me's dream band.

They've been around since 2005, they're on Fat Wreck Chords and Fat Mike loves them, but I am just now listening to them for the first time ever today.

I regret this error.

Smoke or Fire - "California's Burning"

Smoke or Fire - "The Patty Hearst Syndrome"

Smoke or Fire - "Melatonin"

(Is there anything that sounds better in the summer than a pop punk sing-a-long? No. The answer to that question is no.)

Not to be *that guy* but their second album kinda sucked. But on the subject of pop-punk singalongs, you should really check out Teenage Bottlerocket (also on Fat) if you haven't already. Catchy and fun.

I agree, after initial listen, the first record is better than the second. It's grittier. But there are some fun moments on the second record, I think. Could benefit from a little less sheen, though.

Also: Thanks for the Teenage Bottlerocket tip! Will definitely scope that out!

East Bay Night and Disconnected off the new Rancid album are... well, I can't make up my mind if I like them, but in this eternal summer I keep listening to them anyway. Damn singalongs. Absolutely nothing better.

Never thought I would see them on LineOut, but Smoke or Fire fucking owns. Saw them open for NOFX down in Santa Cruz and they kill it live too. Hope they play Seattle soon... Heard rumors of a new record in '09 (fingers crossed)...props to you megan for giving a highly underrated band some much-deserved press!
