Beer Cozy? Or Beer Coozy?

Posted by on Wed, Aug 5, 2009 at 11:15 AM

Last night, while watching the band Attention Class at the Rendezvous, the singer mentioned that they had had merch for sale, including $3 beer cozies. Except he said COO-zies. Beer COOZIES. Then the band's keyboardist/flutist/xylophone player said "It's okay if you call them CO-zies."

After a short argument of which is right—co-zy or coo-zy—they took a vote of the audience and the overwhelming majority of the people in the room agreed that those little foam beer can holder thingys are, in fact, pronounced beer coozies.

What are you people, Canadian? They're cozies! CO-ZIES. Because they're like a cozy little holder for your beer!

I agree. 'Coozy' is stupid. And not a word.

Coozy. Cozies are for keeping warm (cf. "tea cozy"); coozies are for keeping cold.

It's clearly "co-zy" and not "coo-zy". The term comes from the British "tea cosy":

Here in America, we say COOOOO-zy, because fuck the British.

So ... in other words, you don't bother doing any actual music journalism...unless it's some twee band you are friends with?

@8 Actually, I'm friends with the bassist in that band. He's an old Seattle guy who moved to California years ago--used to be in that band Blue Sky Mile. And they have a little bit of a twee thing going sometimes, as a matter of fact! More indie pop than twee, but the xylophone is twee-esque.

So you'd be more correct in saying I don't bother doing any actual music journalism EVEN IF it's some twee band I'm friends with.

I'm with you, Megan. "Coozie" just sounds dumb and wrong. WRONG!

Is this a midwest thing?

I thought the debate was between Coozie or Koozie. A cozie is for keeping something warm, not cold.

When the Tea Cozies dominate the world, this will all be settled.

I thought coozie was a made-up word for the item in question until I went on a river float in backwoods Virginia. The company in charge of the float had a sign advertising the sale of "beer coozies".

Isn't "coozy" slang for vagina?

The name "Koozie" is the official registered trademark for that product so yes, they are called koozies, period.
