Oi, why not stick it to the Man by spending your last hour of the workday watching There is No Authority But Yourself, a Dutch documentary about OG anarcho-punk collective Crass:

pretty fascinating. not always the easiest band to listen to, but certainly inspiring nonetheless...

Would love to see a documentary just on the Poison Girls, of course.

The huge irony is that Crass's lasting legacy is their dadaism, fashion, and iconography -- notably reviving the Anarchy symbol (from Spain's International Workers Association in the late 1800's) -- even moreso than their politics, which I'm guessing must disappoint some of them, given that their music was way ahead of its time.

Crass got better and better with each release -- i.e. more "artier" and weirder and more pissed off -- which is an opinion I realize is rare. Also, without them, many other bands like K.U.K.L. (Bjork's second or so rock group) and Schwarzenegger and the Poison Girls and Chumbawamba may not have existed. Actually, a whole lotta hardcore would be different without Crass.

@3:

I agree. I know a lot of people think they couldn't play their instruments at all, but there was actually a lot of progression going on there. the first few records were really good, albeit inept, anthemic punk, then they started getting just fucking WEIRD. some of the music on Penis Envy is scathing, Christ the Album actually sounds like a decent hardcore/post-punk record, and then Yes Sir I Will is basically 45 minutes of calculated noise that they were able to recreate live (with a piano ballad thrown in the middle). I'm not even going to get into some of the later singles on Best Before, because those pretty mind-blowing and I'm tired of typing.
