It's a Good Week to be a Kid

Posted by on Wed, Sep 16, 2009 at 1:00 PM

In this week's Underage column, I had room for only a short list of recommended shows, but the truth of it is, this is probably the busiest week for all-ages music that the city has seen in a long time—and most of the shows are (at the very least) decent, if not totally awesome!

Because the internet has no space restrictions, here's a more complete list of what you under-21 music lovers can do:

Thursday Sept 17
Grand Hallway with the Seattle Rock Orchestra, the Maldives @ the Fremont Abbey
Method Man & Redman, Spaceman, Fatal Lucciauno, Jay Bars @ Showbox at the Market

Friday Sept 18
Conservative Dad, Kind of Blind @ Piecora’s
The Get Up Kids, Youth Group, Pretty & Nice @ Neumos
Girl Talk, Brother Reade, Junk Culture @ Showbox SoDo
Dillinger Four, Riverboat Gamblers, the Arrivals, guests @ El Corazon
Kids and Animals, the Edison Trait @ Full Tilt Ice Cream (White Center)
Elba, the Globes, the Oregon Donor @ Q Cafe

Saturday Sept 19
Chairlift, the Lovemakers, John Maus @ Vera
Monotonix, Unnatural Helpers, Black Eyes & Neckties (last Seattle show!) @ Neumos
Alligators, Candysound, Kids & Animals, Webelos, Piko Panda @ Mr. Spots Chai House
Bad Brains, POS, Trouble Andrew @ El Corazon
Grand Hallway @ Sonic Boom Records (Ballard)

Sunday Sept 20
Team Dresch, Erase Errata, Telepathic Liberation Army @ Vera
Pet Shop Boys @ Moore Theatre

Monday Sep 21
Pearl Jam @ KeyArena

Tuesday Sept 22
Throw Me the Statue, the Brunettes, Nurses @ Vera
Pearl Jam @ KeyArena

Wednesday Sept 23
Gaslight Anthem, Murder By Death, the Loved Ones @ Showbox Market
GZA, Xperience, Kung Foo Grip, Dev From Above @ Neumos
Meat Puppets @ Easy Street Records (Queen Anne)

That's over 20 right there. OVER 20. In a variety of venues, with a variety of genres. Take that, TDO.

(If I missed any, leave 'em in the comments!)

Damn, too much overlap for my liking... Get Up Kids the same night as D4, Black Eyes & Neckties' last Seattle show the same night as Bad Brains. Unfortunate.

You forgot Portugal. The Man tomorrow night at Chop Suey. Should be a sweet show.

I'll also be at The Gaslight Anthem next week. It's a surprisingly busy couple of months for shows. I'm stoked.

I don't get it. Why does the Stranger overlook the pop-punk scene in Seattle? It's small but dedicated and full of hardworking musicians who are just as dedicated to the craft of writing good songs as any other shoe-gazer or hardcore musician that The Stranger always seems to fawn over. The music reviewers at the Stranger have a serious stick up their ass about this scene cause it is overly populated with shitty christian emo bands, but you're seriously throwing out the baby with the bathwater. Not all the pop/punk bands in Seattle are f***ing christian emo bands, and the Stranger needs to get over their prejudice for this scene.

With that said there is a great show on Friday the 18th at the Showbox Market. It's Sunderlyn's CD Release show and these guys deserve to be heard no matter who they are playing with.

@3 Please make me aware when the Stranger starts regularly covering hardcore bands. We get thrown about as much of a bone as you pop-punk kids.

If you're planning on hitting the Gaslight Anthem show, make sure and get there early for Frank Turner. He doesn't come around here often and he's just fantastic.

@6 It's not that they hate pop-punk. It's that they hate LOCAL pop-punk. Too bad too. There is some good stuff happening locally. BTW-Hepcat was great. They were a lot of fun.
