Film The Most Annoying Part of Where the Wild Things Are?

I think it might have been Karen O. Okay, maybe the truly most annoying part of the film was when one of the monsters asks Max if, as king of the Wild Things, he'll "keep all the sadness out" or whatever. But I found Karen O's intermittent yelping and howling—and occasional line or two of lyrics—in the score to be an incredibly close, distracting second. And I like Karen O.'s yelping and howling and lyrics. I get that the songs and the singing were supposed to be wild and childlike, and it kind of worked on that level, but her voice is so distinctive and it was so at odds with film's fantasy world. I could've done with an instrumental (or at least less vocal) version the same twee, triumphant indie rock score. (Fwiw, I thought the film itself was cute; my guest thought it was cloying.)

I agree about the score. I thought the songs were relatively weak in and of themselves, and distracting as a score. In fact, I'll see your Karen O and raise you a bad sound design - I thought the mixing on this film was way off.

Couldn't agree more. Not a Karen O fan to begin with, but I can think of a billion people who would've made a timeless score/soundtrack for the film, rather than some shitty art-school/indie one that absolutely dates the film. Seriously, horrible decision-making on their part.

I thought the film itself had some really underwhelming (and unexpectedly overwhelming) moments. I'd like to see it again and not be analyzing it technically...just sit and enjoy it for what it is without thinking about how they did it.
