Officers From East Fire Precinct Stop By The Comet

Posted by on Wed, Nov 11, 2009 at 9:31 PM

I was just at The Comet where friends of Ben Hills have been gathering all day to talk about him, cry about him, laugh about him, and drink about him. As I left, two members of the Seattle Fire Department from the precinct that responded to the fire that killed him stopped by. They just wanted to say hi and say that he seemed like a good guy. He was. They are correct.

They didn't have to do this. They didn't have to stop by and talk to the people who where collected to remember the guy. But they did. I've never heard of a fire department doing that. It was welcome.

One of the officers mentioned that the two of them were friends with Officer Brenton who was killed on Halloween. Ben's friends got condolences from the officers. The officers gave condolences to Ben's friends. They told me that it's been a hard week all around. They're right.

@1, Seattle is a small city. I'm not writing or taking photos of the bar/music scene like Hickey and I have met Ben, so he most likely has too. Shame on you for your assumptions regarding a sad circumstance. If he didn't know him, who cares if he went to pay respect to friends and who are you to judge. I'm glad he posted this.

@1-
Hey that's pretty awesome how you made my friend's death a prop for talking the same boring shit we've all come to expect. Real fucking classy.

@1 your anonymity will never be able to hide your empty, cold soul. A good, kind person died and you pull scenester bullshit? Fuck you.
Ben was a very calm, non-violent door guy, and I'd like to think that if he ran in to you he'd beat the shit out of you without any hesitation.

Ben was an awesome dude... Really a stand up guy. I had the chance to work with him for a while and he was always the first guy to want to help someone else... He was a class act and I will miss him dearly.

As a doorman, no one can question my credentials as such, you have your co workers and friends then your regulars-respectively-as your primary and secondary backup: the Police are your tertiary, your ultimate backup. Should you ever have the experience to work the door in a dense entertainment district, you will get to know the police officers in your area and they will get to know you.
It was quite the sign of respect and courtesy for the Seattle Police Department Officer, who works the third watch beat around The Comet, (whom I should have introduced myself to (though I did greet) and his X-Ray (backup)) to show up and sign the guest book with his condolences this evening. Additionally, when I arrived at Vermilion around 9:30 this evening, I was pleasantly surprised to see the Seattle Fire Department well represented by the engine company who responded the fatal fire.
This is community. This is the Seattle I am proud to call home.
I extend my personal thanks to our extended family and community of Capitol Hill and the city of Seattle.
Ben Hills, you are missed.
