This is awesome. I worked there from 98 till the end. It seemed longer than that, but it all started with Alkaholiks. I've seen well over 100 of these. Too much fun to go through all these and so many memories.

6/23/1999 Cibo Matto, Sean Lennon, Imperial Teen. $12

I was supposed to go on a date to this show, but my of-age date blew me off because he went to the Croc show the night before.

luckily four years (almost to the day, even) later I ran into the would-be-date at a bar, and we've been together since.

Luckily the RCKNDY show was really awesome, and I at least fell in love with Imperial Teen that night.

i started listening to ska at the very end of when it was popular, so to see how POPULAR it was is so nuts to me!

3/9/1998 Hepcat, Slackers, The Gadjits. $10 -- even though i have seen these three bands, i am also going to make a pit stop in my time machine for this one. i bought 'at ease' at singles going steady not that long ago.

also i love this: 1/22/1998 Goldfinger, Snot, Sevendust, HedPE. $10. goldfinger and sevendust and hedpe on the same bill like its no big deal.

I remember two of those shows very clearly.

the 3/1/97 Queers show was the first time I ever heard the Groovie Ghoulies, and immediately fell in love. MxPx was a surprise guest, and the crowd went crazy - throwing paper, bottles, garbage - anything they could - and the band refused to stop. Eventually, someone unplugged their shit, or flipped a circuit breaker, or some crazy shit, and they were done. The Queers came out afterward, and played an awesome set of good ol' fashioned punk rock.

And, of course, the 2/20/99 GBH/AAA show was fucking amazing. It was on the way home that me and my friend Jake decided to start a punk/ska band, and the Wise Guys were born.

RCKNDY was a favorite venue, and I still have yet to find any place that I've enjoyed nearly as much. *le sigh*

@20: Essentially that same lineup placed at Graceland not too much later, and I remember going and it being a mindfuck. They had "punk hardcore" bands play between "digital hardcore" bands - watching fans of the Blood Brothers try to understand the two awkwardly well-dressed members of ec8or yelling about "ze polize state in europe" was akin to watching a room full of confused puppies cock their heads to the side in bewilderment. One of the best shows ever.

I can't believe I'm talking about a show that was almost 20 freakin years ago...

Back to topic - so is this only a list of all-ages shows? Cause I don't remember the shows I saw at RCKCNDY being all-ages.

This list is just RKCNDY all ages not the 21plus incarnation.

@13: Not to nit-pick further, but there were undoubtedly all-ages shows at RKCNDY before 1996, while the venue was still a bar. I know everyone's sense of history tends to relate to where they were in their lives when they experienced something (indeed my own history with RKCNDY pretty much ends in 1996), but the reality is that RKCNDY was a legendary (if mediocre) venue well before 1996. Much of the live footage in the movie "Hype" was filmed there. I believe that a Pearl Jam video or two was filmed there too, and many great local and national bands played there (e.g., I saw both Superchunk and Urge Overkill there in 1993 or 1994).

I can't remember how RKCNDY ended up an all-ages venue (maybe it lost its liquor license after one of the owners was arrested for Pot trafficking). But it's really great that it was able to continue to have a life as an all-ages venue. Your most excellent list attests to all of the amazing bands who played there during that period (and makes me jealous I didn't grow up in Seattle).

Looking at it also makes me sorry I missed so many of those shows from 1996-1999. But that just wasn't a venue I went into on purpose, since I was old enough to drink at the time, and there were much nicer places to see a show, given the choice.

Anyway, perhaps this would make more sense for a lead sentence:

"Here is a list of every show that took place at the legendary club during its tenure as an all-ages venue (1996-1999). Now, it's the SpringHill Suits, a dumb hotel that has probably never even heard of CUB or Tchkung!."

Ok, ignorance is officially bliss. I clearly should have been born 5 years earlier so I could have seen all these shows. And yes, I'm talking largely about the "punk" and "ska" shows.

I do not think the 21 plus RKCNDY did any all ages shows.

The 21 plus and All ages RKCNDY were not run by the same people. The 21 plus people owned the building all along but had nothing to do with the running of the all ages club they were just our landlords.

Yeah, lots of memories from before it went all-ages. Saw Radiohead, Hammerbox (I had a huge crush on Carrie), Flop, Posies, Mudhoney, Fastbacks, Young Fresh Fellows, among others.

All those shows, alcohol, and breathing 2nd hand Marlboro Red smoke. I miss it.

11/15/1997 Moby. $12.50

Juno Reactor opened, IIRC. This was when Moby still played a lot of punk rock at his shows. I remember "That's When I Reach For My Revolver." He also did his shtick where he played 1,000 and got up on top of his keyboard. He did keep his clothes on, though.

This list makes me want to call up my mother, channel my inner frustrated 16-year-old self and scream at her about all the amazing shows I missed. (Actually it was an AG show because Show got locked up earlier on the tour. I remember AG did an acapella freestyle about it.) I guess it would be pretty tough to list all the shows from before it became all ages but that would be amazing... it was totally a galvanizing venue for Seattle hip-hop back then.

I volunteered mine and jetted home to get it. When I got back with it, I hid up in the upstairs bathroom when all the staff was kicking out the underage kids (which I was one of) and waited till the music started. Fucking great show.

ps- anyone remember that all-ages place down there named "The Monastery"? I believe it was closed down circa 1988 (my Sr year in HS) after a few too many underage parties.
