Today I Learned: Prince Wrote "Manic Monday"

Posted by on Fri, Jan 20, 2012 at 3:36 PM

I've lived on this planet for 31 years, and I've listened to this song eight bajillion times (between 1986-1992). I never knew until today, January 20th, 2012, that the song was written by Prince.

"Oooh-whooooa-oooa."

Of course it was. Fully 1/4 of all "good" 80s pop songs were written by him.

He wrote "Sugar Walls," but not "Morning Train."

There aren't a lot of songs I wish Prince hadn't written, but this is one.

Prince's best is "Nothing Compares to You" what a great song, even if the Sinead O'Connor version is sappy. It's just really well written.

Don't forget G-Spot for Jill Jones.

"F" is 4 frustration
I'm looking 4 what isn't really there
"I" is instigation
I'm listening 2 the voice beneath my hair
"N" is 4 the naked body
And 4 what my naked eye can see
G-spot, G-spot
Where, oh where can U be?
"A" is 4 America
And 4 the things U read in magazines
"L" is 4 location
I am a clock, the time is 9:15
"L" is 4 the lust we share
We want 2 know that infamous pleasure
"Y" is 4 my yearning
I'm burning into mystery
G-spot {x3}
Ooh yeah
Yeah, yeah
Oh, oh Lord

There's something almost William Blake about it.

He wrote a little of Stevie Nicks "Stand Back."

Prince's version of Nothing Compares 2 U (with Rosie Gaines, on the Ultimate collection) also blows Sinead's out of the water.

I bet you didn't know that Leonard Nimoy directed The Bangles' video for "Going Down to Liverpool" either...

Yeah, knew that. What I didn't know, though, was how it came about.
According to what I just read on the All-Music Guide...

"...Prince -- who was reportedly infatuated with Susanna Hoffs -- offered to write a song for them."

I can definitely understand the infatuation. Hoffs was very attractive and sexy.

Another song on that album, "If She Knew What She Wants", was by another fine songwriter: Jules Shear.

6: When You Were Mine

Another great song. I think that's my favorite on Lauper's debut. (Jules Shear also had a a song, "All Through The Night", on that album.)

Better than "Monday Monday" by the Mamas and the Papas.

Also if I remember correctly, Prince's own Kiss was in the top 10 at the same time as Manic Monday.

PS He also wrote the gorgeous "Love thy will be done" for Martika

Was Martika that "Toy Soldiers" singer? That song truly sucked.

Susanna Hoffs did a great duet album of 60s covers with Matthew Sweet (they are a couple and tour together).

They are not a couple outside of their musical partnership.
