Yesterday I shared a totally wack story about seeing Scarface perform to a unenthusiastic crowd in Houston. I have no stories about seeing his fellow Geto Boy Willie D, but I will tell you that his solo turn on "Read These Nikes" is one of my favorite rap songs of all time. It's all about the ways in which Willie will beat three shades of purple out of your sorry ass if you cross him. Respect is the utmost, and not just a good idea, it's a part of self-preservation; grow up around murderers, thugs, and the like, and you'll probably learn this. Play Willie D "like a hoe"? Uh-oh, damn that's a no-no! He'll invite you to inspect the distinctive tread of his Nike athletic shoes. He'll beat yo momma's ass and go get a six-pack. He'll let you know: "more motherfuckers who've donated blood to the kid, now do you want to make a bid?" He didn't think so. It wasn't all about mindless thuggery though, Willie was a rebel to America. You might not think so, but it was a big deal for a black man in Texas to make a song called "Fuck The KKK". His taunts to Louisiana's would-be Presidential candidate David Duke, who would actually make it into the House in 1989, the same year Willie's Controversy dropped, had to have earned him some death threats. Things done changed. If a rapper got a death threat from a Klansman in 2012, it would probably be for putting too many white girls in their video.
