The Problem With Hating the Redneck Ted Nugent...

Posted by on Fri, Apr 20, 2012 at 5:12 PM

...is his former '60s band the Amboy Dukes were SO FUCKING GOOD. Their radio hit, "Journey to the Center of the Mind," is an amazing million mile an hour rave up. Lord knows HOW that ended up on AM radio! I can only imagine the amount of payola. Thing is, the rest of the A.Dukes catalog is just. As. Good. Yeah, so, it's hard to know I have ALL his records sitting in my collection...and I that I love the shit outta them.

I even have his first couple solo records. They're fucking great also. Whatever...I, however, have NEVER bought anything new so he's not gotten any of my cash...but still...I sometimes feel a little guilty.

There are plenty of artists who make great art but are absolute D-bags personally. You may even know some of them. There are also plenty of people with great politics who are absolute D-bags personally.

Life is so complicated sometimes.

Is this akin to that friend who insists that the first Skrewdriver record is actually really great, and, y'know, they weren't really racist then? I can't get past it, though. Since I don't really like the Nuge, not a problem. The Bad Brains homophobia, however, is more of a hand-wringer for me.

@2..not to derail.. but from a 2010 conversation with bad brains darryl jenifer
http://www.punknews.org/article/39041
' A lot of people have written about and speculated on the whether the Bad Brains are homophobic or anti-gay. I was hoping you could address that and tell me exactly why the controversy exists, maybe put it to rest.

Check it out. All the things I've been telling you about the road and path of The Bad Brains, there was an era that lead into us discovering Rasta and Jah, and these things that were part of us being black and recognizing this part of our culture. Like with anything, say you're a young Krishna, there's a tendency to be over-zealous. We were over-zealous in our views about homosexuality, due to our ignorance, and the fact that we hadn't matured to a certain level. Just like anyone getting into anything. Every member of The Bad Brains are loving and we have nothing against any of god's creatures. In our growth and in trying to become wise and see life for what it is, without judgment, we went through a time where we did judge. Anyone can remember a time and say, "oh you remember when I was like that." A doctor can say, "Remember when I first worked the ER and was all nervous and people were looking at me when I was crazy." So when you're coming in as a young Rasta and discovering it, just like in Christianity, homosexuality isn't accepted. So being young Rasta and studying the religion that's what you see. But if you still continue to study and mature you'll find other texts that say, "love all god's creatures." So you can't just make your own thing and say, "This guys black, or this guys homosexual, I don't like him." The Bad Brains had a period of time where we might have said some things. Meanwhile, we were in a band and were popular, so it got out there. But someone took that and ran with it. People that hated us for various reasons, people that were trying to be like us. I don't want to call any names, but like the band MDC were the first to go out of their way to find something wrong with the Bad Brains. Everybody loved The Bad Brains, so they want to find something wrong with us. It happens with everyone like Tiger Woods, you get popular and people are going to try and hate on you.
So now, Rasta was born in Jamaica and the Jamaicans take the homosexuality stuff literally. But it's about loving all Jah's children, accepting them and letting them live. I love all Jah's children. No one in the Bad Brains hates any of god's children. So people need to stop hating on us with the homophobia stuff and think about it in a more mature, realistic way, like, "Yo, who are these dudes?"
I've seen on your Punknews.org, a whole bunch of people hating like, "Fuck them, they hate gays." And I'm like, "Wow, that aint' really so." In short, no one in The Bad Brains hates gays, we love all god's children. To someone who wants to hate and continue the rumor and put their energy into it, fine, if that's what they want to do. What were going to do is keep a PMA, stay positive and do what we do, till the wheels fall off. '

i can't imagine that nugent will ever evolve to this point..

NICE. Thanks Riz. And to further derail...MDC ripped me off in 1987. Still waiting for $30 worth of mailordered records, BTW. John Wayne mighta been a nazi, but he was no thief.

@3 Maybe they'll take the time to apologize to Tim Kerr and the rest of the Big Boys, but last time I saw HR he was even less coherent than the time before. It's obviously too late to apologize to Biscuit. And if you read Tim's account below, it wasn't simply words, but theft and destruction. Not too irie. http://www.timkerr.net/home.htm. And as for the argument that they were just young and zealous, how does that explain "Don't Blow Bubbles" on Quickness (1989!)? Like I said, I'm conflicted, and I'm not holding a grudge, but it's also something I can't just write off because Daryl says I should. It's also not something that I spend too much time on. I was young and did and said stupid shit too. Nipper, lemme call those guys up and get you sorted. Maybe they didn't send the records because they knew you were a gay-hating Bad Brains fan? Just jokes, man!

@5 !!!HEH!!! I want that Reagan Youth LP!! (I have it, natch, but...I want the one I'm owed!!) Too bad I can't remember what else I ordered!? Hmmm...ALSO, how could ANYONE EVER be mean to Tim Kerr? Serioulsy, one of the NICEST fellers I've ever met.

Now you got me thinking...I think the last time I saw BB was in 1988...pre Quickness. Of course at that time, I dont remember if there was much MRR press, or gossip even, regarding any of the politics of their Jah philosophies. I dunno if I bought any of their records after I Agin I. My housemate had Quickness and played it to pieces. Well, I guess I did, Rior Sessions on LP and Black Dots.

They lost me at I Against I. I bought it and listened to it, but got tired of it quickly. Bought Quickness, got sick of it even faster. ROIR, Rock for Light, early singles I can still play (except the reggae -- liked it then, I guess, but that is another part of the Bad Brains that I just lost all appreciation for ("I luv I Jah" repeated over and over, ad nauseum?)). "Pay to Cum" I still play out. And you're right about Tim: amazing, super nice dude, one of the best, which is why I'll listen if he's got something to say.
