RIP Adam Yauch of the Beastie Boys, Dead at 47

TMZ is reporting that Adam Yauch, aka MCA, has passed away. I'm rocking Paul's Boutique all day in honor. Yauch is survived by his wife and daughter. RIP, sir.

Fuck. He seemed like a good guy. He was into the Tibetan religious stuff. If I recall correctly the Book of Living and Dying had many suggestions for how to die without suffering, and I hope that was his experience.

So Sad. Dang, I'm shocked. I didn't know it was going so badly for him.
I remember the cancer announcement, how optimistic it was. That was right after my mother had been given 6 months to live with hers. In the end, he survived her by only 3 months. Guess you just can't tell how these things will go.

I'm so devastated I can't even articulate a thoughtful post. MCA seemed like a sincerely awesome and kind person. If it was possible to pick a favorite Beastie Boy, he'd be mine. RIP.

Oh, wow... that is so, so sad. I don't listen to them much anymore, but they were my favourite band for a long time, back in the day. I wonder if I still have that copy of Interview with them on the cover?

Very sad day for me. My fav band ever, I had so many good times seeing them live. I guess my last memory of him would be of him sitting in the door of the green room at the old Croc, smoking a cig in full defiance of the smoking ban. Time to listen to the B-Boys distortion tracks, I will be crying in my bunk.

Any of us can only hope to be as productive and as committed in as many areas as he was. On top of his own musical pioneering, his help in resurrecting Bad Brains, his political activism, and his thoughtful spirituality, he also founded the company that is single-handedly keeping worthwhile indie film distribution alive in this country.

@22, I remember MCA sitting behind Joan's desk. I bought the album a couple times b/c it wore out. Friends thought I was an idiot listening to rap group stealing Led Zeppelin clips.

I read he became a vegan to deal with the cancer. I think that sometimes becoming a vegan is too hard on your body. It may have been a bad idea. Especially as any form of radiation treatment needs extra protein to rebuild the normal cells it is destroying as the cancer cells are annihilated. I had cancer and started eating steak and chicken every night, and it went away. I used to listen to them. They were funny. I still have mp3s of early stuff like High Plains Drifter.

For those interested, there is growing research indicating a proper vegan diet improves health in countless ways and helps to protect the human body from cancer in particular, while consuming animal protein, particularly red meat is associated with increased risk of cancer. For an entertaining overview of the health benefits of veganism, check out the movie Forks Over Knives.
Sadly, Adam did not adopt a vegan diet until after he was diagnosed with cancer. He was also taking "Tibetan medicine" to treat his condition.

@38 I think you rather missed my point, it was that he adopted the diet as response to cancer, and that Veganism is perhaps more preventative than some magical cancer cure after you already have the diagnosis. That was my point. I am aware that red meat is not good for you. Having been radiated myself for lymphoma and having a surgery, you can be assured I know what causes cancer by now. I read that, however, studies show vegetarians do not normally live longer than meat eaters. People who eat fish, such as in the okinawa diet, tend to have the longest lives. One of the things I ate a lot of when I had cancer were Salmon Fish Oil pills and vitamin D supplements. Also, I admit to eating uncooked vegetables and Turkey.

Also, I wonder if he had a dietitian helping him with vegetarianism, whether or not he took vitamin B12 supplements, etc, because you cant get B12 from vegetables. I personally dont trust Tibetans. The Tibetan doctor who advised him to be a vegan was obviously a quack.

MCA was definitely an amazing and at the same time, a humble guy.
I remember seeing him with some people at a bagel shop in Santa Cruz and then when leaving, saw him squeezed in the backseat of like, a VW Golf or something.
