With “Meth Valley 99” (which you may have heard first from this post), Portland band Rabbits pay sideways homage to “Death Valley '69,” one of Sonic Youth’s most powerful songs. I love well-executed, music-nerd tributes like this. Elsewhere on Rabbits’ Bites Rites (out Sept. 18 on Good to Die Records), the group indulge in more such tomfoolery, covering Spacemen 3’s “2.35” and Hüsker Dü’s “What’s Going On” (from Zen Arcade, an upcoming subject of Anna Minard’s Never Heard of ’Em column). Which is not to discount Rabbits' originals, whose hectic, heavy lava flow is going to burn some heads.
