Chan Marshall, aka Cat Power called out Miami writer David Von Bader this week for being a "square" and accused him of focusing on her "'physical body" (see photos of the show here) in regards to a review he wrote entitled "Cat Power's Sun Tour Was a Train Wreck at Grand Central Miami" (where he says that she was, "completely torn-down on something... it is beyond uncomfortable to pay money to watch the unraveling of a woman this talented at the hands of whatever vice has her in its grip.") On her Tumblr, Chan Marshall warns the Miami New Times: "u fuck with me, u fuckin with my whole crew," and posted this response to his review :

DAVID VON BADER IS A SQUARE.
FULL JUDGEMENT OF HIS PHYSICAL BODY, BODY LANGUAGE, CREATIVE APTITUDE WHILE ARROGANTLY MISTAKING & IGNORANTLY MISUNDERSTANDING HIM CRITICALLY WITH SOCIAL EYEBALL, SOON, ON MY BLOG.

I have heard that Cat Power performances can be erratic and disastrous, so it's very possible that this show was a nightmare trainwreck. That said, Von Bader's tone comes off kind of paternalistic...some of the comments following his response are claiming that this is a clear case of "vagina envy" and others point out that she is an artist, not a pop singer, and her fans enjoy the fact that you never know what you will get out of her performances.

Looks like she's back on the sauce. I am sad.

I've seen her twice when she was brilliant, and I've seen her twice when she was a fucking mess. The last time was so bad, I had to walk out after half an hour because I was embarrassed for her.

Obviously can't say without having been there, but those photos look like a depressing bummer of a show.

I love Sun, but she should cancel the tour if she isn't in shape to support it--and I was looking forward to the Seattle show. She's acknowledged her struggles with alcohol, and the road seems unlikely to facilitate her efforts at sobriety. Not now, at any rate.

Musicians, authors, actors, whatever, responding publicly and defensively to a bad review almost always puts them in a bad light, in my opinion.

A pop singer is a million times more interesting and valuable than an artist.

What happened to the days when trees were just trees? Now everybody likes to trim, and make sculptures out of them. Do birds really know what's going on? And is Chan Marshall really a cat?
