Dunno about you, but in my book (which needs re-binding, by the way), Mountains—Brendon Anderegg and Koen Holtkamp—make holiday music. And this track from the duo's forthcoming Centralia album, "Living Lens," is worth a million times more to me than all the xmas carols combined. (Scrooge you.) The wide-sky, pastoral drones of "Living Lens" induce a deep, Zenful feeling that traditional holiday jingles just can't muster, due to decades of overexposure and their general corniness of melody and lyric. Centralia is a gorgeous example of inner-space folk ambience, and Mountains fans will be pleased with it, right down to their cuticles. Lovers of peaceful, verdant vibes need to glom on to this.
Thrill Jockey Records releases Centralia Jan. 22. A press releases informs us that "the first 300 orders through Thrill Jockey and Boomkat will include an exclusive bonus live CD recorded live at The Bottletree in Birmingham, AL. Each professionally duplicated CD has a unique artwork hand-stamped by Mountains, and features exclusive music and early sketches of material that would become Centralia. A limited number of pre-orders will also ship on translucent red vinyl."
