Porta by the Market
Porta's menu bravely steps away from Greek-restaurant warhorses, trying instead for taverna simplicity with traditional but less-traveled dishes: The shrimp is served with feta and the assortment of five dips skips hummus in favor of fava, a down-home puree of yellow lentils. The lamb is not a complicated dish—just stewy-sweet chunks of meat braised with caramelized onions, served with feta and cushy grilled pita—but, as the menu gleefully screams, it's "A Porta original!" and it's exactly rich enough without being overwhelming. Also good: pork skewers with tzatziki, red onion, tomato, feta, pepperoncinis, olives, and more warm pita. In terms of the bar scene, the night to be at Porta is the last Saturday of every month, for Greek Top 40, house, and hiphop music and what sounds like an insane party.
