Not too far estranged from Matthieu Kassovitz's La Hainein story style, Chloé Leriche's Before the Streets is a variation of the banlieue story set in Quebec, Canada, and tells of the struggles of a young man in a Manawan reserve. What makes this slice-of-life movie compelling isn't a rigorous pace or high energy (which is good, because this tale is told slowly and meticulously), but its earnest portrayal of what is being filmed. With a beautiful songbook and an indigenous cast, the strength of this picture is in its staid representation of the people. (JACOB LICHTY)
