Sing Sing, Emerald City Soul Club, and Past Lives

That's funny that in the past year of all the shows I've been to that would attract a straight-edge crowd I've only seen one fight and it was between two drunks. In the same year I've been to dance nights, metal shows,hip-hop nights, and 'heavy music' shows with a way higher rate of fighting. There's a reason there is more security at these events than at a show attracting a large straight-edge crowd, even with the same expected number of audience members.

Guess what? Alcohol at clubs = a higher chance of fighting, aggression, and dare I say it rape.

Notice there isn't much talk of fighting and tough guy shit at hardcore shows lately? It isn't because there are less straight-edge kids, it's because people in groups like FSU have disappeared for the most part.
Stop blaming your change in musical interests on the basis of whether the attendants like to drink or not. The fact you used to attend straight-edge shows doesn't earn you any street cred and really has nothing to do with the great soul music being played at the Lo-Fi. While we're on the subject, post-hardcore as a definition of a musical genre lost its meaning in the 90s.
2
It was a joke. Have a beer.
3
Way to talk about a situation that you know nothing about. Are you even aware of what the idiot dressed like Sgt. Pepper was doing all night? I don't think there were too many people losing sleep about him getting hit.
4
It was pretty much me responsible for this fight (and I'm not a fighter) - these skinheads were racist and were trying to blow off some steam acquired after the Obama election victory.

There were also skinhead chicks with them and they chick-battled some girl and pretty much shredded her face. Bloody Hell!

The big problem was that one of the skinny's knew the bouncer so he was letting them get away with too much...
5
What was he doing all night Grandy? Are you even aware?
6
What was he doing then "Bored with Grady"
7
what was he doing then "Bored with Grandy" ?
8
Sgt. Pepper had nothing to do with the fight at all. I watched the whole thing and whoever said he was involved was getting a little to soulful with PBR soup. The bouncer watched the skinheads attack multiple people and did nothing about it. The skinhead chick covered in tattoos punched an innocent girl in the face and the bouncer kicked out the girl who got punched. It made no sense.
9
Sarge, you're an idiot. Calling these racist is the most ridiculous thing ever since most of them dj reggae and soul in Portland.

Oh by the way, the bouncer, who is African American must be racist too since he threw you out.
10
I didn't get thrown out... I left because I was too scared to go back in and face like 4-5 crazy skinheads who by that time were hell bent on fulfilling their hate needs.

You're right, the bouncer was black and he seemed friendly enough with the skinheads so maybe they weren't that racist.

They were still full of hate and were there looking for a fight and not much more.
11
Is this all you have to talk about? Weren't there about 100 other fights at clubs in Seattle that night?
12
Sarge, they weren't racist at all. Their hate needs? What the fuck are you talking about. And weren't that racist?!? Try not at all racist since some of the guys with them were Hispanic, Asian, and a African American woman.

This is just another case of someone running their mouth about something they know nothing about.

Oh, sorry you got hit, but stop whining about it.
13
my last post didn't seem to work, so I'll just say that those skinheads didn't add anything to Soul Nite - they were a total net negative for everyone
14
Maybe not that racist? Considering the racial makeup of the group of people you calling out, try not racist at all. And saying something like "hate needs" makes you look like a bigger tool than the Sgt Pepper jacket did.

15
Regardless what the motive was the punk heads seemed bored with the evening and felt the need to throw a few punches to liven it up. Thanks for coming and hope your travels keep you within the Portland city limits moving forward.
16
ITK- It was your friend who wanted to get her picture with Sgt Pepper himself. Apparently she thought the British Pop Idol outfit was sweet enough to capture on film. Nobody asked to get their picture with you huh? That is because your costume was a joke. One night as Sgt. Pepper will always outweigh a lifetime as a 1950s greaser. The funny thing is your wearing it again today.
17
If you don't think those skinheads all had hate needs then your being naive... they started a fight with me for no reason and the skinhead chicks probably broke an innocent girls nose.

What would be a better term? Violence-addiction? Maybe you could say they had a fight-gasm? Ooh, how about pain commitment?
18
I thought Sgt. Pepper looked cute!
19
3 things -

A skin was hit in the back of the head w/either a bottle or a glass, it's my understanding that was the first blow. I've got an email into the door girl to clarify what went down. I was standing about six feet away at the entrance to the hallway when it all happened, but I only saw Sgt. Pepper backing up screaming for the skins to fight. "Sarge" and "former soul nite fan" I'd like to hear your detailed account of what went down...well, beyond "PBR soup," whatever that means.

I saw the skins from PDX dancing.

Skinhead 'chicks' are called Skinbirds.
20
Dear John Lennon, Sgt Pepper etc.

You know absolutely nothing about the people involved in this. Oh and calling me a greaser, wrong again douche. I'm curious who exactly you're talking about. Also who was my friend who wanted her photo taken? I am friends with a lot of people and some clarification might be nice. I'm sure this is just mindless shit talking of someone who wouldn't be able to talk a big game except in a protected forum like this.

Sgt Pepper don't be mad you got your ass handed to you in front of a large crowd of people and just like Nipper said, I saw most of this go down and someone, whether it's you or a friend of yours, hit one of them in the back of the head with a bottle. So from that point in my book, game on. Next time choose a little more carefully. Also, lets not talk about your behavior in the main room of shoving people out of the way etc. You're lucky this didn't happen earlier in the night in my book.

Pure and simple, this was a bar fight and I'm sure there were countless others that night at bars across Seattle. The only thing that makes this different is some hipster columnist decided to write about it.
21
Oh and maybe next time you decide to confront a group of people the first thing out of your mouth won't be "You wanna go?!?". Guess you figured out the answer pretty quick.
22
I agree with Ick that (part of) this was just a bar fight... we should all heed his/her advice and remember to never ask a group of skinheads/birds, however facetiously, "Wanna Go," because the next skinhead over is liable to start throwing punches and greasers nearby will probably end up taking the skinhead side.

I do know one thing, however, if a skinhead got hit with a drink it absolutely occurred after he threw the first punch.

Now, aside from the hilarity of a skinhead vs. Sgt Pepper bar fight, the real thing for the nipper to try and find out is what happened to the girl who came out of the bar screaming with a bloody face about 5 minutes after the initial struggle. What did she say to the skinbirds and who did she hit with a bottle?
23
What greasers? Who are these imaginary greasers you are bringing into this. The only people I remember being nearby were some of the out of town dj's, the parties in question, and random club goers. You have a wild imagination as far as what subcultures made up this fight.

I witnessed this, the skinhead was hit with the botlle first and it's funny how much of this you decided to leave out in your initial posting. Tell the whole truth from the get go and you may have been able to save a little face.

First off you claimed they were racist and upset about the election?!? Then this just came out of nowhere, then you admit to having some part in this. Not exactly the innocent bystander you'd like to be.

This is boring, it happened 6 days ago, and honestly it seems like you kind of brought this upon yourself. My days of sympathy for people picking fights are over.

24
Yes, fighting in clubs is always stupid; however, it sure as hell isn't limited to soul nights.
And(this is for your Grandy)"if there's one thing more annoying than the Anglophilia involved in soul nights or scooter clubs or dressing up like Sgt. Pepper"..it's a music writer who talks crap about a certain fashionable subculture while lionizing another fashionable subculture. If a dude decides to ride a scooter and dress in a mod suit, as album artwork, whatever, it isn't any more ridiculous than, say, your hipst..er, I mean "Capital Hill club kids" riding fixies in their recommissioned 5th grade wardrobes. An outfit's an outfit, be it Sgt. Pepper or a forgotten extra from the set of the Fresh Prince of Bel Air. So if you're going to start regularly interjecting style/scene criticism into your music column, you need to widen your lens. Certainly there are a**holes in the soul night crowd just like anywhere, but last I checked they didn't have a monopoly on pretentious, or annoying, behavior.
25
I know one thing is for sure--I won't be setting foot into Lo-Fi ever again. Too much hate for me.
26
I see two possible options:

1)ITK is a completely stupid liar

2)ITK is a large, tatted up, multiracial, reggae loving skinhead.

I bet you it's option number 1 because I don't think skinheads know how to read or use a computer :)
27
Sarge,

Assuming things isn't really one of your strong points. You're wrong on both counts.

I guess the only way I could be an anti-racist Skinhead would be that I'm multi-racial, wrong. I'm white and not even a Skinhead. And since I'm obviously in the know about what happened, the rules out being a liar. You have a very narrow view of who could possibly have any sort of an opinion on this.

In regards to your behavior, you seem to dodge some very valid and pointed questions about your behavior leading up to this incident. Maybe it's time you take responsibility for your part in this and let it drop. You're forgetting to mention you acted like a complete and utter asshole all night. When this was described to someone who left earlier in the night they guessed it was you that was involved. Shocking.

To anyone who claims this was done out of hatred, go to any number of clubs in this city and watch the exact same happen weekend afer weekend. It has less to do with the persons haircut and more about someone who needs to learn some manners.

Oh and the part about Skinheads not knowing how to read or use a computer, hilarious. I guess I could assume the same thing out of ill-mannered people who dress up like the fifth Beatle. Booooring.

Come on Sarge, no hard feelings now.
28
I am not going to defend any of the people involved, but I will say that I do know that these "skinheads" were not racist, they were from Portland and have nothing to do with anyone involved with Emerald City Soul Club or Lofi. It is unfortunate that security at Lofi wasnt able to take care of the situation until after it had got out of hand, but I know that many of the regulars and ECSC members, including myself, made an attempt to get these people out as soon as we realized what was happening.

I dont know the circumstances of the fight or how it started, but that really doesnt matter. I will never understand how someone can come into such a positive event simply looking to cause trouble for people who are simply out to have a really good time to really good music. And I am going to have to go on record here to say that I agree with much of Grandy's sentiments concerning tough-guy bullshit. It has no place at Emerald City Soul Club or anywhere else as far as I am concerned.
29
Sarge,
I’m happy that you have enjoyed Emerald City Soul Club in the past and I honestly hope you get over what happened the other night and come back. That being said, I personally witnessed your rude, out of control behavior. You may have been too drunk to realize, but the girl working the door felt so threatened by you, she had to ask a couple of us come over help her. When I arrived, you were about 6 inches from face her shouting. She calmly asked you to leave and how did you reply to that? “What are you going to do to make me leave?”
To summarize the situation, if you’re still trying to figure out what happened the other night, start by looking into the mirror.
30
why is this in the stranger. what a waste! what are you going to post every 5 second fight you hear about. really? and kevin why are u apologizing to the guity parties involved! you know perfectly well that the original people who started going to soul nite before the hipster found out about it were the skinheads. remember that.
31
The girl who was "thrown out" was removed because she was screaming at people and calling everyone racist. You can not have that kind of shit going on in the club. She was then punched outside when she kept yelling at the skinheads. If you are going to talk shit to a skin you better be able to back it up. The door guy did exactly what he was supposed to do...remove the commotion from inside the club so more people don't get hurt.
32
i haven't apologized for anyone. in fact, my comment begins with, "I am not going to defend any of the people involved..." i could care less what subculture one attaches themselves to. ECSC is about MUSIC, the artists that made it and the records that they produced. it is not about scene politics, and certainly not about violence. both parties involved are guilty as far as im concerned, and it is real disappointing to me that this is even an issue at an event that I am very proud to have played a part in creating.
33
There are a lot of misuses of you/your/you're in these comments. For shame.

The difference between this situation and any other bar altercation is the fact that skinheads (of all types - including Anti Racist) have no middle ground, and their only response to pretty much any situation is to fight.

Having them around creates a volatile situation, which has been magnified at Soul Club where there is a diverse crowd and most people aren't going to treat the skinheads the way they want to be treated. Unfortunately, northern soul and skinheads have a long history. They will be around just like FSU kids will be around to ruin hardcore shows.
34
quit being such pussy's, people fight it's part of life get used to it. It's no different in any other scene.
35
Best part about this, Sarge who has had his behavior brough to the surface now has nothing to say. Way to be a spineless chump.
36
Did you catch that 2 skinheads there were African American and one skinhead was Korean. And the girl that was covered in tattoos was NOT a skinhead, but a hardcore chick. Get your facts straight I was sitting right there when it happened. All the skinheads there have been listening and going to Soul and Reggae nights before you dumb hipsters even new what it was to listen to cool music...go get blown by a large donkey.
37
fuck all you hipster bastards. why dont you go back home and snort some coke and buy some more 5th grade outfits. mommy mommy i have so rough! fuck off and die.
38
All the boots have decided to beat up an innocent white person every weekend until Obama is out of office.

Have a beer.
39
This is crazy...I'm gonna give my two cents and that's it...as one of the organizers of ECSC, I take offense to all the people who have taken it upon themselves to recount an event they were not present for or too drunk to remember accurately. Most skinheads are not racist, out for blood or full of hate. These guys were here to attend our evening with all the other folks. It is not their fault that most people are ignorant and assume that their presence means trouble is not far behind. I will personally speak for them and assure everyone that our night is safe. One incident does not reflect upon the entire event. Please come back and enjoy some of the best music in Seattle. Sarge...get a life.
40
It is not their fault that most people are ignorant and assume that their presence means trouble is not far behind.

Though I agree that the skinheads there were not racist/out for blood/et cetera, it is not unfair for people to assume the above statements, especially considering a strong skinhead crowd at soul club almost ALWAYS ends in some degree of violence.

If the skinheads don't want people to think they are violent, they probably shouldn't fight, and instead deal with situations like real adults.
41
Eric, I'm so curious about your comment that maybe Seattle is saturated by dance nights like Sing Sing. I can't think of any like it! That was my favorite favorite dance night by far. What are these other parties you speak of? PLEASE enlighten me.
42
It does not seem to me that anybody here actually has the correct version of the story.

Sgt. Pepper did not start this fight, did not get hit, and he did not get kicked out.

A completely different person walked up to a hardcore girl near Sgt. Pepper when two or three skin heads rushed at him. For some reason, the first words out of this guy's mouth were, "Wanna Go?"

Two or three skinheads (and to me it didn't appear to be the black skinhead or the Indian Skinhead) then started throwing some punches.

This occured very close to Sgt. Pepper and that's probably why people think he was invovled.
43
First of all, I am a skinhead. The dude in the sgt. pepper outfit was starting shit with us. I don't know how he had anything to do with Obama getting elected. And I'm sure skinheads at a soul night event are nazis!! Laugh, laugh!! All you douchebag hipsters know nothing about our culture. Seriously, get your shi straight!
44
Eric - Were you not there? This night was serious. I'm sure you must have heard by now. The girls that got attacked by the tattooed FSU girl and subsequently kicked out, then attacked AGAIN were Corie and Amy. Corie called this girl a hate monger at some point - I believe after the girl got in her face the first time.
The bouncer did kick Amy and Corie out instead of the these skinheads, saying that they were his friends (probably not racist), and then the girl proceeded to punch Corie multiple times outside the lofi. Amy said that, after the bouncer kicked them out, they were pretty much sitting ducks.
45
Perhaps worse than their ugly suspenders and bad haircuts is the fact that you can almost never tell what kind of skinhead a person is. Quite frankly, if you dress like a racist then you are a racist in my book. Dressing like a skinhead and then getting up in arms when people think you're a Nazi is like walking around in a white bedsheet and getting upset when people think you're a KKK member.
Fuck ALL y'all skinheads, SHARPs, redskins, skinbirds, whatever.

46
Wow all of you people are idiots. Oh my god, someone, somewhere, got punched in the face. Alert the media! Eric weren’t you at the hipster party next door when this was happening. Glad to see The Stranger is continuing with their excellent tradition of music journalism ala Kathleen Wilson.
47
whats a hipster party? do you mean the dance club at the LoFi that everyone who thinks they're hot shit in Seattle go to every month like clock work? because I'm pretty sure that next door a punk show was going on. sorry they didn't have mohawks, but yeah, it was a punk show dude. way to suck.
48
hey lee. if you had any pride in where your punk roots come from you wouldnt make it sound like a fucking mohawk is something so taboo and juvenile. fuck all this shit. where have all the PUNKS gone? this city has no guts. overrun by pc attitudes and passive agressive hippie fucks. remember, its not up the "punx" its fuck the "punx"! hippie bike riding idiots.
49
Vomit. you really dont know what you are doing do you? those are some ballsy words.very cocky. if you had any guts you would come up to us and say it to our faces. you know nothing about nothing. hate us or love us.we will always be around. we are the alpha and the omega.
50
Callie. You don't know what you are talking about. Which, doesn't surprise me because you have a long history of pretending to know about shit that you don't. You like the sound of your voice, and to be an authority of crap you are not part of. Point out one girl in Seattle who is FSU. Try, I am sure you will fail. Also, without knowing the impetus to start the fight isn't all this talk a bunch of bullshit? Perhaps something was said that your omni-present ears did not hear, or a shove was not caught. Pure bullshit.
51
If that's what the punk scene hs become, I'm glad I haven't been to a show in a while. I did see a lot of hipster looking kids, fixed gear bike, gay mustaches etc. pouring out of next door. If that's punk, punk is fucking dead.
52
where in "sorry they didn't have mohawks" am I making it sound taboo and juvenile? I just said it to piss off people like you, douche. if you want to dress like a caricature from 30 years ago and call yourself punk, more power to you. I don't ride a bike and am not overwhelming PC, but I do know how to call bullshit when I see it and you sir seem to revel in it. "pride"? fuck your pride. I know where I came from and are secure enough not to have it threatened by a bunch of hippies or whatever you want to call them.
53
people should not talk about what they do not know. You may think you saw it, however you may have failed to see the whole incident, or view it within its proper context. Callie, your bombastic reply is pure bullshit. What FSU girl? Point out one girl in Seattle that is FSU.

Truth: this would not have even made the stranger if it was just normal dudes or hipsters fighting, way to sensationalize a subculture and play into a biased media stereotype, you just give skins more to complain about. It is funny how this made the paper but a show the next week with nearly two hundred skinheads did not, why? No fights...

ECSC was in fact started by a group that included skinheads, the first dances were supported disporportionently by skins, this was/is born out of the local skin community. Slag on them all you want, but if it was not for them and their culture you would not have a soul night
54
later Sing Sing hipster slimes - you going to New York is like a turd crawling back up into it's own butthole. Can you take Grandy as well? We can all pitch in for a 1 way ticket, I know times are tough but that would be an exception.
55
Man...Grandy! Gossip column, written by an aging hipster with really, really bad taste in music!

Blek!!

No more Slog for this guy.
56
Can we start a non-skinhead soul night?
57
stop crying! soul night is fun and u know it. why would you boycott because of a handful of people. stop bitchin and moaning already.
58
the skinhead chick covered in tattoos that attacked that innocent girl is actually a hardcore chick named tammy. i saw her on this calendar she is modeling for.
