For Dinosaur Jr. you perhaps should have started with something later. Even later than Bug (from 1988, the album after YLAOM), but Bug is the album they went on tour for recently, because it's "the" Dinosaur Jr. album.
From the point of view of the whiny guy, you're putting the cart before the horse. He doesn't clean his room and goes to band practice because (he thinks) girls wont go out with him.
The last verse of the first song, Freak Scene, about a crush(?), explains what you may be missing: "Sometimes I don't thrill you/Sometimes I think I'll kill you/Just don't let me fuck up will you/'cause when I need a friend it's still you/What a mess"
But later albums, featuring mostly just J Mascis as a one (or two) man band, are more accessible for people that do not assume the worst about themselves.
Good taste once again, Anna. I agree with both reviews. I always loved T. Rex. I got to see Marc Bolan live, the last time he played Seattle in about 1974. In the 1990's, younger peeps kept telling me I would just love Dinosaur Jr, because J. Macis was supposed to be such a great guitarist. I always thought he sounded lazy and sloppy.

And they kill it live.
That being said, I like T. Rex more too.
