Grocers, the Chemical Lobby, and an Economist All Explain Why They Oppose—and May Attempt to Nix—Seattle's Proposed Ban on Plastic Bags

I hope the plastic bag industry puts another referendum on the ballot. I will happily support their attempt to once again override the city council.

I am more concerned about banning disposable diapers rather than plastic-bags... At least we can recycle plastic-bags. Lets face it plastic-bags are a neccesary evil, we need them to hold our paper takeout containers when they fall apart.

The American Chemistry Council is more than just some bag makers. . . and your sources here are obviously a stretch. good cause, awful journalism. try again

@1: Um...along with your overly enthusiastic support of gridlock and gas fumes, right?
You seem hellbent on finding extreme ways to choke to death.
Why?

You stupid piece of shit, plastic grocery bags have nothing to do with "gridlock and gas fumes," except the ones that have gummed up what's left of your brain.

I got my first taste of this in the UK in the mid 90's where bags cost 3p. It wasn't a huge fee, (actually about equivalent to 5 cents) but it was extremely effective at reminding us to save our bags and stuff a few into our pockets when we went to the shop. It's nice to see Seattle catching up to a not-particularly-environmentally-conscious country 15 years after the fact.

This isn't going to bankrupt anyone, reusable bags are handed out like candy, and your existing plastic bags will last a good long while if you simply remember to bring them.

If you doubt that plastic bags are ubiquitous in our litter-stream, and a major drag, perhaps you would like to join my Edmonds-Woodway Colores Unidos group on their cleanup of Pine Ridge park, 2:30-4ish on Weds the 14th, rain or shine.

Please wait...
