"Seattle needs someone who will work with City Council. Also, FUCK CITY COUNCIL. And fuck you. And you. And you. All of you, individually. You'll get a card in the mail saying that. Personally signed." - Ed Murray, probably*
*except in the case where you read his questionnaires and you see he kinda does give City Council twin birds
@6, To expand on your comment: Harrell also has a huge pool of (primarily white) supporters- UW football fans and UW alum. They shouldn't be overlooked.
Harrell's only supporters are minorities? Are you crazy? He's earned my support through multiple policy decisions that benefit me as a person living in this city. Haven't you heard of his rate-stabilization account for Seattle City Light? I guess helping people with their bills doesn't count to this Stranger contributor.
What else hasn't he done as a city council-member? What about the Job Assistance legislation that his office spent the last year piecing together with the business community and major social justice groups? Is that nothing to the Stranger, who strongly supported that legislation?
Oh and giving poor kids a leg up with broadband internet and computers, through the Great Student Initiative to provide Seattle public school kids on free or reduced lunch access to the internet and computers. A plan that was so fantastic that Comcast expanded it nationwide. I guess that doesn't count, never mind that it helps people I know personally who live in Seattle and can't afford to bring their kids up-to-date with technology without it.
What about removing the transgendered exclusions in the City's insurance plan? I guess the transgendered community doesn't matter to you, just like the poor kids, people who have committed felonies, and you know, the every day Joe and Jane who have electricity bills.
@10, As a minority, my issue with Harrell is that his position on public transportation appears to be just as reactionary as Steinbrueck's--in an interview with the Seattle Weekly, he said he was interested in cars having more places to park rather than expanding public transportation. Fitting for a candidate with a Bellevue Condo.
I hate this. I have not been pay attention to any of these yahoos and obviously I have been missing out on some of the best free entertainment in the city. Are mayoral candidates in other cities as "interesting" as ours?
Funny that you put the 37th district Democrats in McGinn's endorsements. That endorsement was split with Harrell. In fact, McGinn hasn't gotten a single clear endorsement from any district Democratic group.
People despise McGinn, for good reason. He's a lying asshole. It probably doesn't help him to fight a war on cars in a city where more than 80% of the people have cars.
McGinn's biggest enemy is the 63% of the voters who will support Satan before re-electing McGinn. That's where I'm at. I think Harrell and Murray are clowns, but I'd vote for either of them over McGinn.
@30 The 37th endorsement IS ALSO listed under Harrel's profile. Harrel also shares his LD endorsements with other candidates. Are you arguing that he also lacks clear support from district Democratic groups?
Also, this "war on cars" rhetoric is just tiresome. Whether or not 80% of Seattle residents own a car is irrelevant. The important number to look at is how many people USE their cars daily - for commuting purposes or errands. That number is significantly lower (61% for the entire city) and lowers even more when you look at Seattle's denser neighborhoods. People want transit options in Seattle. McGinn doesn't want to take away people's cars. He wants to provide them with the option of not needing one.
Ed Murray has the most amount of endorsements, being the only candidate in the race to get a sole endorsement from the 34th and 43rd Dems. Not to mention the countless union leaders: Sheet Metal Workers Local 66; Plumbers and Pipefitters UA Local 32; International Union of Operating Engineers Local 609; International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 46.
God: Reading McGinn section again makes me want to vomit. McGinn's ineffectiveness in city hall is why our city can't get anything done and this fluff piece section on him is lame.
It looks as if the the two most likely candidates for Mayor of Seattle are Mike McGinn and Ed Murray. It really is a crying shame Dan Pike didn't get re-elected mayor in Bellingham.
PLEASE, people---cast your votes to ensure that whoever wins this race is an effective mayor who will STOP the coal trains and derail Big Coal's evil for-profit agenda!!
IBEW 46 is "key" for McGinn, but nor for Murray (with whom it is shared)?
Seattle Building and Trades Council is "key" for Harrell, but not for Murray (with whom it is shared)?
And no mention of Murray's endorsement by the WA Building and Construction Trades Council, or by the Plumbers/Pipefitters, or by the goddamn Teamsters for Christ's sake!
This city needs to take a serious look at Peter Steinbrueck; his idea of density is about preserving the character and diversity of a neighborhood! I don't want everything to look like South Lake Union and we need more affordable housing. If developers are scared of him it is because he has a backbone to do real planning versus giving them the farm without watering the crops! Time to stop thinking that a handful of green roofs and a couple of rain gardens is low impact development y'all!
@4, yes, McGinn was out there with a snow-plow rigged up to the front of his bike pedaling away all the snow. I'm sure his street in Greenwood is well plowed by city workers, although maybe not with the direct orders that were given by SDOT to plow Nickels' street.
Once again, the stranger shows part of its dislike for Steinbrueck by failing to mention he's the only viable candidate saying "lets rethink this arena thing". Harrell and McGinn are the leaders of the "lets give resident property taxes to Ballmer and Hansen so David Stern will smile at us again" club.
If Murray is elected mayor will continue to do government consulting:

#34, the "war on cars rhetoric" is "tiresome" to those who've been caught fighting it. But it's going to get that asshole bounced out of office, because the voters see the truth of it.
Murray will be every last bit as bad as McGinn, but he won't be as smooth or smarmy a liar. He's got a higher chance of melting down, so I'll vote for him with a perverse enthusiasm.
Good article - so hard to be both funny and accurate. Thanks ya'll. And I have to join the chorus and say that these illustrations are killer. You must contract this artist as your regular profile illustrator, she's the best you've ever had.
The prime sponsor, Sen. Ed Murray, D-Seattle, also condemned the search provision in his own bill, after I asked him about it. He said Palmer is right that it’s probably unconstitutional.
“I have to admit that shouldn’t be in there,” Murray said.
Earth to several of the above comments re Harrell's accomplishments:
Job assistance legislation
Key vote to block pan handler legislation
Met with John William's marchers while everyone else was awol. Everyone else at that time was afraid of the SPD and wouldn't cross it.
And in more griping about the endorsement listings:
This lists Steinbrueck as endorsed by the King County Democrats, but the KCD also endorsed Murray and Harrell (in other words--endorsed every major candidate who is not the incumbent).
Bottom line on endorsements is that McGinn hasn't gotten a single clear endorsement from any Democratic group. And his largest group of contributors turns out to be (ta-da!) city employees! Gee, how shocking is that?
further @ 56--
Actually, that was a bit snarky. I apologize. It is sometimes hard to tell if a Stranger writer is making a reference to something you never heard of, or just going random.
@59, you forget that in 2009, McGinn slammed Nickels in the primary for getting so many donations from city workers. But it's okay. Once you're a lying asshole like McGinn, how much worse it is to also be a hypocrite?
@56
you must be young....
Mary Martin was an actress best known for playing Peter Pan in theater and in movies/TV. This candidate is a namesake of that long dead actress. Larry Hagman, another dead actor, was in fact her son.
@62, but I thought the Stranger hates anyone who's not young. I guess that's only when the old guy likes his neighborhood, drives a car, and opposes apodments. Then he's old and must be killed. But if he's old and remembers Mary Martin, then that's okay.
That was funny as hell. But, just to be serious for a moment (I know that's not good form), does anyone other than city employees really want to vote for McGinn again? It will take Seattle years to scrub off his stink! And Murray, seriously? Good state senator, but he knows DICK about Seattle politics. I've seen him speak, it's sad! Steinbrueck and Harrell are the only serious candidates. We should let them fight it out in the general.
Peter Steinbrueck needs to take elocution lessons. He has the most dreary, flat, nasal voice. I thought that the whole time he was on council (cause I was an employee and had to listen and respond). Now when I hear him again, it all comes back. That blackvoice reading at the library didn't help a bit. He might have some OK credentials, but I knew Victor Steinbrueck (true! when I was a grad student at UW Archt.) and he's no Victor Steinbrueck.
If you are not "White",of the Lower Class,and/or are a Leftist, then you are a fool (who is not hurting everybody in the same soceital boat you are in) if you don't vote for the Socialist Workers' Party's Mary J. Martin. ----- http://www.themilitant.com
Funny no mention of McGinn as the one issue - oppose the Alaskan Way V Tunnel - Mayor. As the Stranger played a major role in electing this one issue loser I suspect a mass airbrushing of reality is required.

rather than distorted soundbite wisdom from the hacks at the stranger, you can get the story from the candidates themselves...

You're citing an article called Mistake in Gun Bill. As in, a mistake was made during the initial bill drafting.
Seems to me like he doesn't want the police to search your home.

Little-known fact: Best known for her role as Peter Pan, Martin is also the mother of actor Larry Hagman, who she gave birth to at the age of 18.
Is this a reference to her looks? If so, bad form, Stranger!

Actually, that was a bit snarky. I apologize. It is sometimes hard to tell if a Stranger writer is making a reference to something you never heard of, or just going random.
My question was an honest one, and I'm glad the answer was more straightforward goofiness than a mean-spirited jab.
