This is not a new issue. When I worked for Zeeks Pizza 2001-2005 this was routine. We complained to Department of Labor and were told we needed to sue to change the situation and could not report anonymously... later another group of employees obtained a settlement (non-anonymously) for being forced to "wait to clock in". I am happy that this is getting press, but everyone needs to know this has been happening in the hospitality industry for a really long time, probably forever.

I worked for McDonalds 3 years and never got paid anything! I was paid in McNuggets only.
I got 32 McNuggets per hour so my weekly nuggetcheck was for about 200 nuggets. I took it
to court and the lawyer cost me $3,000. Here's
the real bummer, man: The lawyer did not accept
McNuggets!

If we steal from employers we go to jail, when they steal from us we are forced to either waive any punitive damages through the wage and labor bureau, or pony up several hundred dollars to take it to court ourselves.

That's if it's not thrown out because they make us waive our rights to civil trial in being hired in favor of binding arbitration of the employers choosing.

Please wait...
