Gap?
Bad Rollins!
3
#1 dude at the Navy? Sounds like a legit rank.
4
what a whiny article. this is pathetic. who cares if the dude's not friendly. he's more accomplished than you'll ever be. you don't like it? don't pay attention to it.

randolph hearst, jr., right on man.... I agree with you.

Henry Rollins has done more for this fucked up society than the lame writer here will ever do... Oh sorry... What's your name again? I don't even care... Rollins is huge, angry and despite all your stupid observations, he's gotten more shit done in a daily basis than most of us will do in a year... I just don't get why you hate him, you think he's a sell out because he works for people and gets lame characters in movies (he doesn't even say he's an actor, he even puts himself down as such, but he gets paid, like everyone, in any job)

Whatever he's got, he's earned it with work, nothing for free...

It's easy to resent Rollins. The "live everyday as if it were your last" work ethic/philosophy works as long as you have an audience.

If you are a plumber, carpet fitter or one of the other hundreds of millions of people throughout the world who perform banal, unexciting, non creative, but absolutely necessary tasks, no one is going to be interested in your opinions.

Rollins does not actually do anything other than "be Rollins"...the persona he constructed for himself as a young man. Rollins is forever talking about being "real" & honest, etc., yet has spent his life creating the Rollins persona in front of our eyes...documenting it for us all to see.

His adult life has been a 24/7 performance piece. "Rollins mode" is how he has described it. Like many other people ( usually rock stars & actors ), he is compelled to be this person whether he likes it or not. He's trapped.

Like Ozzy Osbourne or Lemmy, he's stuck with the suit of clothes he has chosen to wear. It's a comfort zone he's been in for most of his life. Letting go of the Rollins persona would mean no longer "being Rollins" & the end of his "career"...and being Rollins is a career, because it is how he has made his living for 30 years. Whether he likes it or not, he is a product that never leaves the store.

i absolutely respect his work ethic. he takes the money he gets for adverts etc and puts it into his projects .that works for me .and actually he is in a position where a lot of young people listen to him when he adresses sth other than popculture eg the memphis three ,political topics etc . i think if people from there maybe get into more social/political topics thats actually a relevant achievement. even if he appears to be a little trapt inside his own skin ,arent a lot of people? to me he adresses valid points, and he seems to be a good person. s o what if he s not always perferctly friendly.its quiet easy to put him down ,i say try and be as involved as he obviously is.

Rollin's has an interesting take on the GAP sellout viewpoint. He refers to more recently when Iggy Pop was accused of selling out for those car insurance ads.

He said, If you're gonna have to sit through this car insurance commercial, wouldn't you rather see Iggy Pop up there than anyone else? After all he does deserve all the money he can get.
9
i think all of you have no consideration for the fact that he has given up on the punk ethos ( no decade required ) this bitch of american (us) standards of thought has degraded the process of how we revolt. if you have to go on tour to provide, fuck off, you can find a job in any city. My philosophy of any ameriCAN artist is to travel globally without money, is to just get the fuck out of their country and go. Just like the old vagabonds on the trains. American Punk has only been weakened by their lack of travel, due to the fact that they have never been signed, or contracted.... which sounds like all that are hunted.

Fuck you Lois. The only reason you have any attention at all is because you used Courtney Love's name for your band. She is more relevant to music than you will ever be. All you dumb whores in the riot grrl scene are jealous that certain women can keep credibility, while also having mainstream success. Women like Siouxsie Sioux and Courtney Love are great because they are real, and not because they are politically correct feminist robots.

11
your unglued, incoherent rant is duly noted. it could use a little more cowbell.
12
Where's your rant about the legions of fascist bully feminists out there patting their underlings on the head every time they shit on their opponent; i.e. anyone who (1)has the opposite junk below the belt, or (2)doesn't agree with everything that comes out of their mouth because they can actually see hypocrisy as it is being written and refuse to agree to appease fascism that hides under the guise "the progressive intellectual good grrls"....?
13
His 'talents' are all second rate.

A self absorbed contradiction.
14
You forgot that Henry Lawrence Garfield is like 5 foot nothing. Not a big deal but given the name, the stature, etc we can all see he's really, REALLY got something to prove y'know? Whatever. I think he's a joke. It is funny to me thought, the hordes of 13 year old pocket sprokets online who see him as Das Fazza figure and defend little Henny LAwrence Garfield from any scrutinity of his bullsh!t. Hey, Henny, if you're gonna talk sh!t about everyone else, don't be afraid to have some slung your way cockknotter. Haw Haw Haw. I am laughing.

You forgot that Henry Lawrence Garfield is like 5 foot nothing. Not a big deal but given the name, the stature, etc we can all see he's really, REALLY got something to prove y'know? I think he's a joke. It is funny to me, also, the hordes of 13 year old pocket sprokets online who see him as Das Missing Fazza Figga and defend little Henny Lawrence from any scrutinity of his endless torrent of bullsh!t. Hey, Henny, if you're gonna talk sh!t about everyone else, don't be afraid to have some slung your way cockknotter. GAP ads? Haw Haw Haw. I am laughing now.
16
Fuck Henry Rollins. Sell more Gap Jeans Henry, you fucking hypocritical jock.

17
IF YOU HARE HENRY, YOU SUCK AND YOU'RE A LIAR, YOU'RE A LIAR, A LLLLLLLIIIIIIIIAAAAAAAAARRRRR!
18
I think it's safe to say Rollins is responsible for a higher percentage of good music that people will remember than, say, you. So he's a dick. Its 25 years later, get over it.
19
I wish he would just drop dead already! He is pure pollution! I think it is pretty dumb that the Rollins fans are getting upset and personally attacking the author just because they disagree with and/or don't understand this article. I guess this proves the fans are just as immature as the man they worship, very sad.
20
I have always thought that he is no where near as smart as he thinks he is.
21
I agree with comment #4: what a whiny article. this is pathetic. who cares if the dude's not friendly. he's more accomplished than you'll ever be. you don't like it? don't pay attention to it.

If you don't like Henry Rollins then don't listen to his music, don't see his spoken word shows, don't read his writings or pay any attention to him.

Nobody is forcing you to do any of this when it comes to Rollins.

Lois Maffeo's music sucks and she's a nobody and always will be, and yes it does sound like she's very jealous of Rollins' success and his music.
22
So your not a fan then?
23
Rollins the new Ayn Rand? What an uniformed person you are. This a quote from Rollins' book Occupants: "I mean, everyone knows Ayn Rand was a cunt, even the cowards who still pathetically affix themselves to her pseudointellectual bullshit know that,"
24
While it's true that he's an obnoxious unchecked ego with some seriously problematic beliefs, that he's nowhere near as important post-Flag as the world would seem to have it, and that his pop-culture durability is more than mildly baffling, it's also true that this article is childishly whiny and utterly fails to make the case of its headline. There are plenty of names you can level at Rollins (I personally favor "Neck Head"), but I don't see how Randroid and Fascist are legitimately among them.
25
haha. the comments about how 'henry has accomplished so much so stfu you aren't famous' are so damn ayn randy.
26
Henry Rollins is an obnoxious arsehole with a seriously limited imagination, much like most of the people who've responded to this article. Hardly surprising he's popular in LA.
27
Henry Garfield's boyfriend got killed in the same room he was in. Give him a break.
28
this was originally published in 1999, everyone… just saying.
29
Not to mention little Henry Garfield was an upper middle class chap whose daddy abandoned him and his mother, which is a situation that even in the modern 21st with single mother acceptance and support networks both financially and emotionally available is hard, yet he got to go to an all boys prep school in Maryland snd was very well to do, even for the suburban hardcore kid audience. He's best compared to Jack Kerouac; used liberal socialization to get known, and comes outta the closet as a man in favor of "piety and order", calling all those who do things that is typical to the culture they raped to get known (whether it be Henry Garfield denouncing all things punk or Kerouac denouncing all things hippy) idiots, confused, or stupid. Henry, whose Black Flag had NOTHING to do with Morris or Ronnies hardcore punk and was and still is grunge, is an asexual freak, much like Kerouac, only Kerouac was a writer snd a pious adventurer of sins. Henry was never around girls, or women, going through puberty, and therefore would have undoubtedly been attracted to the men and boys. However, hes so ashamedof his male, homoerotic (and those who were around for his Black Flag or Rollins Band KNOWS he brought a new level of homorroticism that couldn't even be rivaled by Glen Danzig) fantasies so he, like a gridiron player whose 1st love is to strap on tights and roll on the grass with guys, sleeps with women not because he's attracted to them, but just so no one will ask questions. Check out Henry flipping out on YouTube when 2 chicks say "get in the van". He does not approach them as a man, he approaches them as someone who is disgusted by women. He is an idiot and should get no credit for anything other than homoerotic art, grunge, and being a right wing idiot

I love all the goofy Rollins support here! lol! jeez! talk about childish fanboys on the verge of homoerotic CosPlay with Rollins' image! you guys need to oil up, bust out the Rush, and have at it. the rest of us can laugh at you all slithering over eachother's nakedness in your glorious Rollins fantasy moment.

Sorry, but Rollins is a self-indulgent moron. Lately, he's doing this super fake "humble" schtick, where he sort of apologizes for being a jerk in the past and cannot muster the energy to judge people anymore. I guess someone enlightened him recently or something. But, still, why should we care about him at all? What's he DO for society? he goes out and speaks to a bunch of doughy, middle aged white guys so that they all feel good about the corner of the earth they occupy.

And Rollins' music/books/art? Screaming about being hurt by your daddy when you were 5 is kinda boring if you're over 6. And the music is all 3rd-rate fanboy knock-offs of the Stooges and MC5, etc. Maybe some 14 year olds still buy this stuff... but how sad it must be to be 40 years old and still a Rollins "fan".

I'm still waiting on someone to tell me what Rollins' worth is. He's not married, has no kids, doesn't actually DO anything but self-indulgent blather. I suppose that the new more "humble" Rollins is "greener" and he surely recycles... but come on... is he down in South America building hospitals? Is he working for MSF in Sierra Leone? No, he seems to be travelling a lot around the world to help himself... and maybe along the way, he picks up a few heartbreaking stories about the locals to add into his feel good segment of his "stand-up" routine. such a humanitarian!!

besides, he was a dick to Nardwuar. fuck him.

Please wait...
