But as the culture changes, the Vatican may find itself left behind. Just a few weeks ago, conservative archbishop Charles Chaput gave a speech citing a Pew Research statistic that 10 percent of Americans described themselves as ex-Catholic. Ex-Catholic, Palacios said, "is the second-largest denomination in the United States," sandwiched between active Catholics and Baptists.

This last week my nephew and I were having a conversation, and he said he wanted to make the world a better place. He was thinking about politics or a priesthood and I laughed.

"Politicians and priests don't change the world, civil leaders do. Politicians and priests take the credit once the majority of people's minds have already been swayed by true advocates who stood up and spoke out when there was actual harm in doing so."

He looked at me for a minute and said:

"That's actually pretty sad."

Yes.

Yes it is.

I am a liberal Dem, but I will be voting for moderate Repugnican, Bill Finkbeiner, for Lt. Governor. I'm not sure why The Stranger endorsed our conservative, marijuana legalization foe, Brad Owen, in the primary. Can anyone at The Stranger explain this to me? Thanks.

Catholic clergy might be conspicuously absent from the conversation, but the president of Seattle Prep (Catholic HS) isn't. On his blog on the Seattle Prep site, he said the following:

"I am committed to conservatism: I am more conservative on social issues than is the norm in the Pacific Northwest. I believe interpretations of our Constitution should preserve the original intent of our Founding Fathers. And my worldview is grounded in Catholic faith tradition.

It is for these reasons that I support Washington’s gay marriage law. Although gay marriage is usually perceived as a liberal position, I actually see this law as being consistent with conservatism..."

He goes on to detail why, as a conservative, he is in favor of the law and why he doesn't believe same-sex marriage is in conflict with the Catholic faith tradition. The rest of his thoughtful argument can be found here: http://www.seaprep.org/page.aspx?pid=598
