With its ever-changing menu—half of which rotates every three months or so—the 5 Spot focuses on different American regional cuisines. There's also standard diner foodstuff, somewhat on the yuppified side. Happy hour features mac and cheese, a bacon-and-eggs breakfast, and so forth from 10 pm to midnight.

Don't care about the atmosphere...
...this is the kind of food we "older" folks, who remember where Empire Way was and why our town used to be called the Jet City, could find anywhere in the '60s.
Now, even the expensive version is hard to find.
I don't care if it has yuppified somewhat. Heck, even Yuppies gotta eat.
Their Reuben is, by the way, as good as any I've had in New York. Have to ask where they get the bread - it's delicious.

So, after reading some of the other reviews, it's really unfortunate that some of the other readers have had such bad experiences. I personally LOVE this place, and when the question comes up of where to go to get breakfast in Seattle, the answer is always the same: 5 Spot. I will concede that it gets busy (especially on the weekends), but call me crazy--busy has always been a GOOD sign to me. I have rarely had a bad experience with the wait staff (not any more or less than anyplace else I have been), and I have NEVER had a complaint about the food, other than the fact that they run out of stuff sometimes because it is so yummy. My suggestion: go there and see for yourself. You will not likely be disappointed.

Embarassing
The food is overrated and the waiter we had was so very rude. Queen Anne should be embarrassed. The bread pudding was burned beyond recognition but so soaked in bourbon you could have lit it on fire. Kudos for creativity and scenery change but I ask loyal patrons- why not just go somewhere new if you want a change of scenery- they might also have good food. Big portions do not equal quality.

Changing Decor
I have always enjoyed going to the 5 Spot, not only for the food but for the ever changing decor and themes! It almost feels like an entirely new place every time I venture in....which is usually only once every month or so. I had first heard about 5 Spot on consupo.com and have never been let down by this place! Although it is definitely jam packed on the weekends, the wait is worth it and if you aren't looking for lines, try their late night happy hours! You can get some cheap eats and not have to deal with an overcrowded wait! Right on 5 Spot!

I always get the herbacious omlette, it is amazing!!!!! Everyone should try it. The servings are huge but I always manage to eat all of it, including the yummy hashbrowns. Go hungry and you will devour everything.

The Splendid Spot
Breakfast at this place is pretty rad. It took me like 20 minutes to decide what to order because there were too many tempting items on the breakfast menu. (Which was ok, since the coffee is so delicious.) It was pretty busy when I was there, but the service was still great. Only problem is you might have to wait to sit down. But it's worth it.

Good food, but that's it.
1.) Pretty damn tasty, but a bit fru-fru. Portions are 2-meal big. (9/10)
2.) Overpriced, but not excessively so. (6.5/10)
3.) Unexceptional service (6/10)
4.) Atmosphere is retro meets yuppie. It almost works. (7.5/10)
5.) Good drip coffee. REALLY good drip coffee. (9.5/10)
Summary: Not worth driving across town for, but worth visiting every few months if you're in the neighborhood.

Sadly overrated
I've eaten here a few times, always because someone wanted to go there, and it was never that good. All I can figure is it might have been one of the first places they went after a fun outing, but the slow service and ok food isn't that good.

Good in theory.. but not worth the price
Waited 40 minutes for table, not sure why. I took my family here because they wanted basic mid-priced American food, and I wanted to show them a decent local place. Might as well have gone to a chain restaurant because it would have tasted better, been served warm, and cost less. The mashed potatoes had many giant chunks of uncooked scallions and had a slightly antiseptic aftertaste (boxed??). All proteins were overcooked within an inch of their life. The bill was a bit of a shock after such an unsatisfactory meal, much of which was left on the plate.

Boiler makers and eggs!
A long pass time of friends and mine is after a long night of debauchery and swill is to pour ourselves into a chair at 7 AM, order a 2 egg and a glass of the hair of the dog. Of course you could go spend a fortune at 13 coins and be with the self assured, or run the gambit at the Hurricane if you really want to deal with that in the morning. But even the staff there eat at the 5 point...

All American Awful
We were here on a Sunday nite, (8/26)about 7.45pm. Kinda busy but not packed. Ordered pretty basic food, (hot turkey sand, rueben, pork chops and the massa dumplings). Food shows up an hour later...it's cold...tasteless....not worth the overly inflated prices for what is essentially an upscale diner...the waiter was extremely inattentive, almost surly....never once apologized for the long wait or offered an explanation...he got a 10% tip...This is my third experience with this local chain and probably my last. Only Coastal Kitchen is ok. I mean, let's face it; it's an overpriced Denny's with nice decor, mediocre food, ambivalent service and outlandish prices. Next time, I'll go to Mecca.

overworked programmer's refuge
I can remember when the 5 Spot extended their dinner hours to midnight. It gave me a blissful feeling. Often I straggle home at 10pm or 11pm after a long, high-pressure day at work, feeling weak and exhausted, and face the conflict between my trembling hunger and my utter disinclination to cook anything. Before, my only options were 13 Coins, which is too snooty for me, or Minnie's, which was where I usually would go.
Now the 5 Spot is my denouement of choice for such days. They have nice, comfy booths, of which several usually are available at such a late hour, and most having a little light fixture I can use for reading. They have also nice, comfy food, like pork chops with gravy and mashed potatoes, or a hot turkey sandwich (with, um, more gravy and mashed potatoes), or a soup of the day that's usually something hearty with vegetables.
Not long ago they raised the comfy bar even higher by adding a fruit crisp of the day to their dessert menu. If I've especially redlined on hunger that day, it comes with the consolation that I'll have room for the fruit crisp after dinner. What I envision in that case is not only the fruit crisp, but the *coup de grace* of comfy for me, a bacheloresque combination of the fruit crisp, a cup of coffee, and one of their darker beers (preferably a porter) on tap. Ah, bliss!

Hmm
So, I want to like these places. They have the benefit of a fixed menu as well as the touring half. Sadly, I do not. The drink I ordered, a Hawaiian Sun(rise/set?) was lovely - beware the grenadine dregs - but the food was disappointing. Perhaps I always get the wrong thing. It's just ordinary and not great. If I'm going out and paying for food I want great food or good comfort food and this place has yet to offer me either.

Damn good food!
One of the top breakfasts in Seattle and the Hawaii menu is amazing, there is not a thing on it I do not like. The staff is friendly with a spot of attitude that makes it fun. I take all of my freinds there when they visit from out of town.

Late Night Happy Hour
The 5-Spot must have the greatest marketing campaign, Sunday morning the block in front of the space is filled with SPU kids, yuppies, and whomever else is willing to wait in line for an overpriced mediocre breakfast. Where the 5-spot does shine is in their bar! Friendly bartenders that will remember your name after you go in twice, a great late night happy hour: $5 mini meals and $1 draft Pabst makes even those that don’t want to eat there happy to go.

Home of the $12 Bowl of Lettuce
This place is huge with the yuppies and I'm not quite sure why. They line up here for brunch on Sunday morning for utter mediocrity. I've been twice and all I remember is cold oatmeal (which was sent back) and an $11.95 salad that had two small strips of chicken hidden a mound of romaine. Perhaps the yuppies had working mothers who couldn't boil water and served Oreos for dessert?

Part of the Atlas foods upscale comfort food mini-empire. The indi-kitch on the walls rotates along with the menu every 3 months. The food is decent, the prices are a bit high and the service is mediocre.

"my" place
My whole adult life I wanted a home base restaurant, and now I have it. They recognize me when I show up & the bartender knows what I like to drink! Heaven.
The food is - almost without exception - good to excellent, and sometimes divine. If you have any weekdays free, skip the weekend brunch time (over-packed & long wait) and get the same great food in a calm atmosphere M-F.
I *heart* 5 Spot. I take all my guests here, and the prices are reasonable enough that I can even treat with a full heart.
