Green star South Pacific

Thurs at 1:30 and 8 pm, Fri at 8 pm, Sat at 2 and 8 pm, Sun at 1:30 and 7 pm, Tues-Wed at 7:30 pm. Through Feb 21.
Star director Bartlett Sher has burrowed into the heart of South Pacific and found that—to no one's real surprise—it beats pure entertainment. This production is the touring version of Sher's 2008 Broadway production, which won seven Tony Awards, including best director. The Rodgers & Hammerstein musical is pure pop, from a land before rock 'n' roll. (It opened in 1949, one year before the founding of Chess Records, which would help rock 'n' roll forever unseat musicals as mainstream America's soundtrack.) The songs in South Pacific are so familiar, watching it sometimes feels like sitting through a jukebox musical: 'Some Enchanted Evening,' 'I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair,' 'There Is Nothin' Like a Dame,' 'Bali Ha'i,' and on and on. (It's the opposite of a jukebox musical, of course. The old musicals used to give America its hits, stitched together with a few plot points. Jukebox musicals take someone else's hits, stitch them together with a few plot points, and pretend it's something new.)

okay, maybe TWO AND THREE QUARTERS

im a former professional actor from seattle now living and working steadily in new york. saw SHREK a couple of weeks ago. enjoyed a good part of it. BUT....
shreks ballad and fionas pre wedding ballads need to go, unless they are there for tech/costume changes. needs about twenty five minutes cut off the show. nice scenic design. leads were great (farquad was friggin OUTSTANDING; he steals the show and will win an tony) but, having replaced donkey already, they need to replace the actor currently playing him as well. did the eddie murphy voice, but there was abosolutely no physicality to his part that matched the voice to the body movements. he moved like he had had a bottle of nyquil on the rocks at five min. before curtain. a dismally created character.
they also need to figure out what to do with dragon. underused, confusing ballad that drizzled to nothing in the second act.
and speaking of, so many of the shows songs did the same thing, they just kind of drizzly shitted into an ending. no big finish, or at least in a majority of them, excpeting lord F's.
granted, its a work in progress. im sure it will get better. just as soon as they give the donkey the boot.
