The 9 Lb Hammer is great at what it does: serve drinks, have bands sometimes, and provide a Georgetown hangout with free pool and peanuts. The place feels old-saloony even though it's not, with tippy barstools and mismatched furniture, and there are couches, too. As reader-reviewer HandBanana puts it, "I like it so much, if this bar was a lady, I would make sweet sweet love to it."

customer service anyone?

preface: this is not a direct dig on the owner of 9lb but rather an observation of how he chooses to run his business and in the process, insult the hand that feeds 9lb!

I am a big fan of Georgetown for many reasons, many of which most people know who have been there. Old town atmosphere with new flavor. Bars with real bar backs and the same floors that people walked on decades past. Bricks, a brewery (old and new), coffee, tattoos, food, art and most important: ATMOSHPERE.

So I was in 9lb Hammer last week on a Sunday night and ordered my usual double Bacardi and Coke in a pint glass (10 bucks), tipped a dollar and proceded to the "back room" and noticed no one to be found. Perfect, I thought. I grabbed one of the two satellite remotes and started channel surfing before stopping on PBS 9. I was munching on peanuts and after my cocktail, grabbed a Manny's. I sat back down to the flatscreen and a few minutes later I heard someone behind me. "That TV has to go off,...mumble, mumble".. I turned around to find the owner walking fast towards the TV and behind him was one of the bar girls. "It's my fault, sorry" she said. I then asked the owner if there was a problem with me watching my channel and he spouted, "don't you people know this is a bar?, it's sports only!, it's going off." Click, it was off and I was dumbfounded. No big game on, no one arguing over the TV. Just me. A paying customer because I like 9lb's atmosphere, the games, the bar girls, the tamales, the peanuts, the whole shabang!...What gives? I had heard of the owner's moody rants but this was silly. No way to run a business in my opinion. Oh well, the drinks are weak and expensive and TV dinners suck. And who wants to smell the cigarette smoke drift in from the smoker's coves. Which by the way are 25 inches from inside vs. 25 feet!.
Hello Jules Maes. FYI Jules has a killer grilled cheese and tomato basil soup combo!

It's a go

Service is great, drinks are good, music is good, atmosphere is pretty relaxed, and it's within walking distance if you live around and near Georgetown. I hope it doesn't get blown out too soon.
