Dave Segal

Dave Segal joined The Stranger as staff music writer in 2004. In February 2006, he replaced Jennifer Maerz as the paper's music editor. Before these promotions, he began freelancing for the paper in 2002 and started writing the Data Breaker column in 2003. Data Breaker covers the music-mostly weird electronica and underground hiphop—about which nobody else in the city wants to write. He also freelances for XLR8R, Alternative Press, Jazz Times, Portland Mercury, and a handful of alt weeklies. Previous to these activities, Segal toiled as reviews editor for Alternative Press (1994–2002), as an editor for Contemporary Literary Criticism with Detroit data provider Gale (1986–1994), and as copy editor/freelance writer for the once-legendary music mag Creem (1985–87). Segal also maintains an unlucrative hobby DJing under the name Veins and from 1996–2002 hosted the radio shows Cosmic Slop and Secret Ions on Cleveland State University's WCSB, where he soundtracked countless acid trips. Segal holds—very tightly—a print journalism degree from Casey Kasem and Helen Thomas' alma mater, Wayne State University (Detroit).
