Indeed, I think Americans are now fatigued with war, especially the kind of bleak and unsatisfying conflicts offered up by the middle east.
As Israel grows ever more paranoid and militant, it becomes increasingly difficult to see how our interests overlap with theirs.

It's not just Israel that wants to stop Iran from building a bomb. There are plenty of Arab states that fear such a thing. I'm reluctantly coming to the belief that Iran must be stopped and if that means war, then there's that. But I don't really believe it does. Iran would lose a war. They know it.

Interesting assessment from Ross. Agree that Israeli-American relations are very low. I believe the Israelis will strike and sooner than 9 months, from what I've read it could be as early as this spring. I don't believe America will be drawn in per se. But, it will pose a great conundrum for Pres. Obama and at the worst possible time, the spring/summer before the election. I agree that the real victims besides the target, Iranians will be the Palestinians. I believe no Israeli-Palestinian peace deal will be brokered under Obama's administration even if he should get re-elected. Don't get me wrong I wanted a deal yesterday! But, the Middle East is as complicated as ever. It's most distressing to read of imminent hostilities between Iran and Israel.

On February 5, 2012, President Obama invoked the NDAA, which authorizes the use of military force, and issues an executive order declaring the “threat” of Iran a National Emergency. The video below shows this issuance of President Obama executive order which declares Iran’s threat to cut off oil supplies a national emergency.
The executive order directs all government agencies to respond immediately to the threat. It further invokes the authority of the 2012 NDAA (National Defense Authorization Act) which gives the President the power to launch military action against any nation without the approval of Congress. War with Iran would likely favor a second term for Obama. How many Americans would swap presidents at the beginning of a war? I'd wager not many.
And it's not as if Obama would be shy about it. He would wrap himself snugly in the flag and use his fabled charisma and oratory skills to sell the fuck out of war, and present himself as the baddest mofo for the job. We got a preview of that in his SOTU.
Could it be that war with Iran is what this has all been leading up to? Extending the Patriot Act, signing 2012 NDAA with its indefinite detention provisions, this "emergency" invocation of NDAA (thanks @10). And since withdrawing from Iraq, we now have a bunch of idle troops, ready to be redeployed.
The War Machine has been plotting to sink its hooks into Iran for years, as laid out in a Brookings Institution report titled "Which Path to Persia?", complete with references to a "Tehran-sponsored 9/11" (while 9/11 itself was predicted by PNAC when it imagined a "new Pearl Harbor").
And how does Syria fit into all this? Are agents in Syria instigating internal conflict and encouraging calls for US intervention (to allow US forces to gain another foothold in the region)?
It seems the only force that could overcome this rising tide for YET ANOTHER WAR is that of a well-informed and ardently opposed public.
At least there's one presidential nominee who is vehemently opposed to wars of aggression that the public can rally behind: Rocky Anderson.
