I hate these fucking human beings. This is the United States of America, it shouldn't be such a goddamn struggle to extend equal rights to all citizens.

Oh wait. I just remember all of American history.

Why does this country vote on human rights? Did I miss the vote in the 60's on blacks being entitled to equal rights?

shouldn't the secretary of state's office throw out i-1192 due to the old "defense of marriage act" we had (we had one didn't we?) that did the same thing and has now been repealed via ESSB 6239. also, shouldn't r-74 just take care of both?

i'm all for intiatives and referendums but i'm scratching my head on the need for basically the same thing. other than that it could torpedo marriage equality.

"Redefine" should not be in the ballot language.

@2 - It is indeed a complete metric ton of smelly steer feces that we may have to vote on a civil right in this state. It is indeed wrong to vote on ANY civil right, as civil rights should never be left up to majority determination.

But if these bigots and fools are determined to get this on the fall ballot, then you can be DAMN SURE that vote we will, vote we will in droves, and make it clear to the feeble-minded and the empathy-impaired that Washington is a state that values ALL of its citizens equally.

@2, our state has enshrined in its constitution the right of voters to put to a referendum any legislation the governor signs. All they have to do is gather x number of signatures and it goes up for a vote, no matter what the topic is. It was meant to give voters protection against corruption among electeds.

I am going to start a referendum drive stating that only weddings performed by contestants from RuPaul's Drag Race be considered legally binding marriages. However, marriages officiated by Milan from Season 3 will not be binding. Further, all marriages in the state are nullified until the couples are remarried by one of the said contestants of RuPaul's Drag Race

I wish we could start an initiative to end all referendums and initiatives.

"This bill would allow same-sex couples to marry and modify existing domestic-partnership laws. Religious organizations and clergy would retain the rights to refuse to solemnize or recognize marriages and to refuse to accommodate marriage celebrations."

Not so hard, really.

I'm going to submit an initiative that requires all signatories to these initiatives and referendums to henceforth wear one shoe with a sole that's two inches thicker than the other. Clump, clomp, clump. To reflect their status as moral cripples. Sonsa bitches.

Actually, Initiative 1192 is an attempt to redefine marriage as only between a man and a woman, thus excluding gay relationships. maybe we should take over that term and tell NOM to stop trying to redefine marriage in Washington state.

On the other hand, what if they both passed, as unlikely as that would be?

We'd have successful measures saying that same-sex couples could/could not be married.

Good luck to any court trying to figure that one out.

I feel like I'm going crazy. How is this allowed? This is not a Democracy. This is entrapment.

You know what's seriously weird to me is that Dan Savage has barely mentioned this in any of his posts or columns, as far as I have been able to discern. Which seems seriously fucking odd to me - the state he lives in, the home state of his husband, passed marriage equality and he has so little to say? Why? I hope he's not still holding his grudge against Jamie "butter wouldn't melt in your butt Pedersen" after all these years. And yet, this strange silence. Seems very, very odd.
