Goldy, don't worry. You already lost your y chromosome

Horrifically bad science frim the New York Times' science writer. Will wonders never cease.

The vast majority of species on the planet get along just dandy with no sex chromosomes whatsoever. Even if the Y were to atrophy completely, sex definitely would not come to an end.

Those two paragraphs from the NY Times are absolute BS. I can't believe those passages made it past any editor with half a brain. Fortunately, the rest of the article is built on... you know... actual facts, rather than some conjecture and cultural anxiety ("OMG! We're all gonna die! Why can't men catch a break? Senator Santorum was right!")

I spent five years studying sex chromosomes, and not once did I meet a male biologist who was "alarmed" and feared that men would cease to exist. The sexes have outlasted sex chromosomes -- even the sex chromosomes found in most mammals. Men won't cease to exist, and anyone with a C average in a basic introductory genetics class could provide more than a few reasons while the extinction of the male sex is inseparable with the extinction of the human species.

Parthenogenesis would probably be fine from a sociological standpoint, but unfortunately the species would probably die out from disease after a couple generations of reproducing asexually.

This is the stupidest fear I have ever heard of, if it actually exists (re: Jimbo).

I'm not sure why, exactly, but this makes me happy.

Obviously this is just another consequence of the homosexual agenda. No, no...don't think about it rationally or start quoting "facts"...it just is.

Link Paul Constant, Goldy just "surfs and posts" without any digging on the articles they link to.

If I were you guys, I'd be far more worried about your telomeres shortening from all the fatty food you eat.

This has been debunked by science for a while now but it has hit cultural mainstream so now people believe this crap. The Y-Chromosome isn't going anywhere and hasn't even significantly changed for the past 25 million years.

Fish Wrench Asteroid 12
This story set off my bullshit detector when it first came out over a decade ago. Anything involving sex and the relative size of two objects just takes fire in our culture regardless of the facts involved.

It's not the size of your Y chromosome that matters... it's what you do with it.

Okay, totally thought this was a Mudede post at first. Also, this article is stupid.
Any mutation that causes its carriers to become infertile with 100% penetrance WILL NOT be passed on. What. the. ass.
Also, nobody's ever heard of an XX/X0 system of gender determination? Many organisms formerly using an XX/XY system (including a few mammals) have lost their Y chromosome without too much trouble.
@10: You would worry about high-fat diets shortening telomeres because you know very little about biology. There are two known causes of telomere shortening: cell division and oxidative stress. Seriously, get the fuck out.
