Reading Shapiro's book on Evolution (which you suggested), and it's telling of all the epigenetic influences, I'm starting to think you can get Neanderthal genes from a toilet seat.
Charles, I'm not quite sure what you are getting at? Did I miss something somewhere when people thought Europeans were somehow superior because they had more Neanderthal blood? I've never heard that.
The only thing I had heard along those lines with homosapien mixing with Neanderthals is that perhaps the rare true red-head/insensitivity to any sunlight recessive gene (maybe?) had something to do with a Neanderthall throwback.

I'm also confused, I have never seen or heard anyone make the argument that Europeans(solely, your posted sources list multiple nationalities) benefit from Neanderthal DNA?
Most of the types of people who would make this argument don't generally believe in evolution in the first place

Anatomically modern humans originated in Africa about 200,000 years ago, reaching full behavioral modernity around 50,000 years ago.Its 2012 and Newt, Romney and Santorum are the Republican front runners? Do you know where your evolution is?
this was just a recurrence of the please-let-it-die debate in anthropology over single or multiple evolutionary origins for human "races." The racists keep coming with this crap, whether neandertals or denisovians or whatever, but they keep getting proved wrong. Morphogenesis always wins out but polygenisis always gets all the press for some reason. And for those of you that think charles is wasting time preaching to the choir because racism is over and people no longer believe in scientific racism--i challenge you to grade the anthropology papers of any given class of college freshman. you are wrong. you are very very wrong. these are points worth making. at least i hope they are...
