I can't stand videos edited this way. And most of her arguments aren't valid, either.

As a former resident of "the Lucky Country" let me say that they have a cultural blind spot to the offensiveness of people "just saying what everyone else is thinking."

Having said that, the nationalised health care was FANTASTIC. Skinny young vegans are pretty off-putting spokespeople, but one can't help but wonder if all the big business interests implicated in her rant for keeping everyone fat and happy aren't at work behind the scenes astroturfing the popular opposition to the govt getting involved in healthcare...

If we all have to pay for it in our tax dollars and the grotesque profits of big pharma and insurance companies were no longer guaranteed, maybe there'd be less tolerance for healthcare-intensive unhealthy living.

If you're really so fit, you should be able to push the fat people out of your way. Or, if you can't lift anything heavier than a lettuce leaf spread with sunshine jelly, you should be thin enough to slip between them.

The Fat Vegan

My first vegan experience was in 1977 in Honolulu, Hawaii. I was working as a resident doctor at Queens Medical Center training to become an internist. Jeff Lane, a young doctor, was my intern and a vegan for ethical reasons—he did not want to harm animals. Outward proof of his convictions was his nylon belt and plastic shoes. But there was one glaring inconsistency: Jeff was not the picture of good health. He was very overweight with greasy skin and acne. I soon discovered why Jeff’s health was so poor: most of his calories came from potato chips and Coke—items easily available to him in the hospital dining room, gift shop, and vending machines. He was the ultimate “junk food vegan.”

Cross contamination shouldn't affect a vegan. My favorite is the Raw Vegan channels because they don't cook food, but they use a video camera which is made from plastic (which is cooked) and they use cars (which cook oil) and they are all girls who think they are the most beautiful people in the world

She's right about the fact that everyone judges, and that people who can't tolerate being judged often feel that way because they're conflicted about their own actions.

@ 22, glad you agree. Because that's what being judgmental means - believing that you are totally right and people who disagree with you, or don't conform to your standard are intentionally ignorant, if not evil.

@14,

You could say that about people who judge others. Oh, actually, you did in #22. Care to be consistent?

People who are secure in themselves don't need to judge others. They're content to live and let live.

@7 for the win.

@26: We're always judging others as it's a fundamental instinct. It's how we protect ourselves, from avoiding criminals to annoying siblings. In the current context we all judge peoples life styles not so much as to cast dispersions as it is to determine the best way to interact with others.

@29,

In your first post, you implied that fat people don't like being judged because they're insecure about being fat. When someone called you on it, pointing out that bigots think gays should rot in hell, you claimed that was exactly what you were talking about.

Gay people understandably don't like being judged that way. Is it because they're secretly insecure about being gay, or is it because bigots are fucking assholes who should mind their own business?

There's nothing wrong with being a bit judgmental, sometimes, when some individual or group is doing something particularly odious. A small gang of douchebags catcalling passing women may be casually dismissed as sexist and maladjusted drunks. It is entirely fair to mock Lee Raymond for being a fat, ugly, amoral sack of shit, because he has the money and power to not be a fat, ugly, amoral sack of shit if he cared to.

If, however, you find yourself sneering at virtually everyone on earth for sharing the same, to your eyes, individual and contemptible moral failing, you might be kinda loony.

@30 - I didn't imply that. I think a lot of people do feel some guilt about factory farming, but they eat meat anyway and don't like being confronted with the realities of how horrible animals are treated because of that guilt. And yeah, I think everyone is judgmental to some extent.

@35, there's a grain of truth to what you're saying, but the way human psychology works, being a confrontational asshole only drives people to entrench in their beliefs. We don't like to be made to feel bad, so the more someone calls us out on something we're inconsistent about, the harder we work to justify it. Witness, if you will, a bunch of soft-hearted, socially conscious (and anxious) liberals in this thread - probably mostly supporters of animal rights - going to town on the girl in the video because of how unpleasant she is.

@36 - See, this woman is using that same rationale.

Matt from Denver 39
@ 35, everyone judges. That's not the same thing as "being judgmental," which is a noxious personality trait. That's this woman's problem - being called "judgmental" obviously stung her, and she decided to try to rationalize it away, mixing up the definition of "judgmental" (which describes some people but not everyone) and "judging" (which everyone does).

Veganism rests on a whole lot of rationalized, but not rational, arguments, so it's no surprise that one of its spokespersons responded in this fashion.

Fat politics. It's a fine line. On one hand, overweight people have been treated as ugly, and that needs to change, but by the same token, willful fatness is bad etiquette.

I'd like to think it's possible to make not being unnecessarily fat a part of everyday social etiquette, but I don't see how that can be done without reinforcing the "you're ugly" messages of the last 200 years or so of fashion.

In obese countries like the US and Australia, obesity has been normalized in ways you don't see in Asia. This woman and her video might not be the thing that catalyses change, but change is overdue.

Hilarious child. Your eating disorder won't protect you from ever getting sick. It is not only fat people who eat poorly that get diabetes and cancer, you know. But you don't know, do you? You are young and self-righteous and enjoy feeling superior. You are sure your junk science is some startling revelation for the planet.

Enjoy it while it lasts. After a few more years of eating the way you do, your body will start to break down in startling ways which (judging from your hysterical evangelical raw-vegan tone) you will read as a problem with "toxins" and likely attempt to combat with daily wheatgrass-and-raw-gravel enemas. Your glowing youth will fade into the yellow-green wasted complexion of a harpy in her 60s (though you will not be quite 40). And who will smile at your breasts and click on your videos then?

Or maybe someone will conk you on the head with a big rock like in the Flintstones and you will come to your senses. Yes. This is a good idea. Anyone with access to big rocks want to help this young lady out?
