Is this really such a pressing problem? The photo bears no resemblance to the world I live in. Most of the plastic bags I get are reused for storage or trash bin liners. An Australian study said 60% are reused this way. I would have to pay for what I get free now.

Then there are the unintended consequences. It makes it much more inconvenient for pedestrians and bicyclists to spontaneously pick up groceries on the way home. They would be forced to lug around bulky canvas or nylon shopping bags everywhere they go. Actually, they wouldn't. They would just use their cars, instead.

So the water, detergent and energy used to launder re-usable canvas or nylon bags have no environmental impact? Especially considering that most people will have to buy plastic trash bags to replace the grocery bags now being reused for waste. I know I don't want to use my kitchen trash can without a plastic liner. In that case, i would have to wash it out daily thanks to wet trash.

From reading Slog, I get the impression that two of the biggest things needed to improve WA state are a plastic bag ban and a state income tax. That's not what I'm heading from my family there, though.

a lot of people aren’t aware of the problems plastic bags cause.
Ah yes, humanity's answer to everything: Instead of being proactive and instituting a little reform with a little pain, wait until a problem has ballooned so far out of control that it forces everyone to stop everything to deal with it, at massively increased cost and massively increased pain for all.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, but the human race will continue to ignore that for short-term hedonism.

@5: how often are you washing your reuseable bags, anal retentive chef? i don't think i've ever washed mine.

Perhaps instead of banning them outright, you should impose a small fee on the bags. It seems to have worked well in Toronto: http://toronto.openfile.ca/toronto/text/…

@10, I'm not washing them, I use the disposable plastic ones offered by the grocery store that would be banned. But if I did have to use re-usable, I would have to at least wash the ones that have the milk jugs in them since the milk jugs are *always* covered with milk and/or dried milk residue. Same with bags that carried meat, unless they keep the plastic meat and produce bags.

Why not force them to adopt more bio degradable plastic bags? Seriously, banning plastic bags just screw over people who dont own a car. With these plastic grabby handles, I can hook on 6-8 plastic bags at a time, walking 5 blocks home from QFC. With paper, the handle will probably break on the way home, and im paying 5 cents per bag for that luxury.

I am still trying to become better at remembering to take my reusable bags to the grocery store with me

Perhaps I don't quite understand the problem with banning plastic bags. Europeans (speaking as a 1st generation American) never used plastic bags (always brought their own and or a basket to haul away their groceries) and most of them (my family included) never owned cars and have been doing this for a very very long time. This give a shit attitude towards your planet for the sake of convenience is pathetic at best.

I know this is real... but let me rant!
Is this a joke? I can't use a paper bag to carry my groceries on the bus...on a rainy day. Do you know how much rain that we get here? I am hoarding my plastic bags. The best plastic bags are from Bartell Drugs. I save all of them. If I have to, I'll fly somewhere twice a year, and pick up some rolls of plastic bags for rainy days and for the trash and for sandwiches, for cat litter, etc. Maybe I can just order them on Ebay or from the manufacturer. Let me repeat..I CAN'T USE A PAPER BAG IN THE RAIN!
