I voted against 1183 because the state stores are currently well run and provide benefits to employees that the private alternative will largely eliminate.

I voted against 1183 because of the 10,000 square foot provision, which has nothing to do with liquor sales and everything to do with squeezing small businesses out in favor of big box stores.

The public safety provision didn't even register; I don't care about public safety one way or the other, and if even if I did this liquor money would have no effect on public safety. Whatever that is. I wouldn't be surprised to find out that I am an opponent of public safety.

I do however want Costco to get fucked. But this lawsuit isn't the way to do it. In a dream world, all restrictions on liquor distributorship and retail sales would be removed entirely, and selling liquor would be like selling socks or tomatoes. Liquor distributorship today is as much a relic of Prohibition as the WSLCB store are, and it's also a relic of organized crime.

Voted against because the system in place is tolerable and the method of privatization was disagreeable.

"determine whether the inclusion of a provision to provide $10 million a year to enhance public safety caused voters to vote for a measure they otherwise would have rejected"

While it made no difference with me, how is that a problem?

Oh no, I only voted for this legislation because I agreed with part of the legislation, time to roll it back!

I'm for removing the state from the liquor distro business, but there's something irrationally gross about drinking any bottle liquor that was purchased at a Target store.

You left off the answer that encapsulated the issue.

"I voted for 1183, but only with the provision that any harm it might cause through more accessible liquor, would be ameliorated by an additional $10 million for public safety."

In other words, we know a whole lot of people are going to go out at 1:30 am and get drunk from liquor bought at the AM/PM, but somehow, printing brochures will prevent them from driving their Dodge 10 cylinder the wrong way on I-90 into a family of six's SUV.

Same as @2, I voted against because of the 10,000 square foot provision. I didn't even notice anything about public safety money.

I voted against it because the 10,000 square foot rule is stupid, and also because I am a puritanical fun-hater.

Voted for it just so I could cancel out Fnarfs vote.

So, as we predicted, it's illegal but the courts kowtow to their Corporate Masters and overseas sovereign wealth funds.

Figures ....

I voted to cancel out Akbar Fazil's vote, so the Sounders could win the Triple C Cup.

I voted against it, because I dont drink booze, just beer and I didnt want to see the beer isle shrink to make room for booze. My wife drinks booze and she voted for it, because she didnt like having to walk 4 blocks out of her way to the liquor store.

I'm originally from California. I remember my first trip to the state run stores here in Washington. I looked around and thought to myself, "Well, now...isn't this quaint?"

@2, the 10,000 sq. foot rule bothered me to, but I voted for it anyway because that provision will be adjusted later on and we all might as well enjoy the convenience now.

I voted against it so Costco would spend millions of dollars on another campaign. No, really.

Or how about this:

Costco put the language in the initiative.

They perhaps figured that it would help to add the language, and considered that it would be struck down later by a judge as a likely possibility. So Costco ends up factoring in the costs of another initiative and defending the current one, and just maybe they figured that if it was struck down that people would be so pissed that they could ride a wave of anti-government sentiment to a win down the road in a year or two, and all at a price which they can afford!

Just sayin...

@10 - Not to beat a dead horse, but I never fully understood this argument. Beer is kept in refrigerators. Liquor is kept on shelves. Rarely are those two thing even contiguous. Is there a provision concerning % of sq. ft. of space each store can dedicate to alcohol I missed?

From a sales and distribution perspective, I suppose the equation becomes more complicated, but it's impossible to tell how the tastes of you neighbors will shape your local supermarket's shelves.

I really want to move to @10's Beer Isle. Maybe I'll become a restauranteur there (Brendan's word, not mine).

10,000 ft store rule defused the opposition's arguments from last go around. Remember they argued that every dime store on the block would be selling the hard stuff -- to your kids.

I had no idea that those privitization ads with all of the police and firemen had anything to do with public safety!
