I will be the first to admit that Jesus was a hippie-jew-queer. But to claim he was a scrawny television health fanatic is heretical and I won't stand for it. My personal jesus was a curly-haired, ripped-as fuck, big bear discipline daddy with a penchant for punishment. Amen.

Thanks for calling a spade a spade... Those Driscoll Dudes are just bullies, philistine bullies.

Just an FYI from the filmmaker...While I am bummed that David was "disinvited" and wish he could attend, they are still showing the film tomorrow night and others from the film will be there for a discussion about Holy Rollers afterwards. While I don't necessarily agree with the action taken, we have to remember that Mars Hill was actually nice enough to open their doors and host a screening for us. They had no obligation to do so and simply wanted to host a fun evening of film and discussion in support of our film.

Hope you all can make it.

"Disinvited" from a public showing of a film at a church that "Excommunicates" members for not signing a "Discipline Contract" and that "shuns" former members commanding current members not to associate with them.

I grew up in a ridiculously right wing fundamentalist church, and even that church would have considered Mars Hill a cult. It'd be a joke if they weren't doing actual harm to people's lives.

Meh. I kinda wish the filmmakers would find a different venue to show their film, in light of this disinvitation. "Nice enough to open their doors" but not nice enough to invite all involved onstage? No thank you.

"Mr. Driscoll, I know you think you're a real macho man, but clearly the emperor has no clothes!"

Wow.

As a former MH member, I obviously have my differences with the church. I was upset when I heard the news about David's back-off, but I saw a chance for redemption in doing to MH, not as they had done to my friend, but as I WISH they would have done. After all, Christians need Jesus too... Especially his love and forgiveness.

But now I see, having read this article, that their fear was well founded.

According to the Law, when someone knocks out your tooth, you have the right to knock out theirs. Jesus has taught us that the best response to sin is not retaliation, or even pacifism, but to turn the other cheek. That means accepting their sin against you, AND the punishment for it.

No one said forgiveness would be easy, but as Christians, it is how we profess (or pretend) to live.

If you would like to see the new way of life through the Grace and Truth of Jesus, I invite you (as one of the subjects of the film Holy Rollers) to come to MH tonight to see a film about how Jesus changes everything, but only if you let him. There will be Q&A afterwards. (and knowing MH, plenty of coffee, and maybe even a cookie or two...)

(Also, some of the filming actually took place at the MH Downtown campus. So you can watch the film in the very room in which parts of it were created. That's kind of cool...)

I wonder if Bonhoffer would have taken that approach? Turning the other cheek to a serial abuser and his serial abusing church? Hardly what Christ was talking about. I think His actions in the temple whipping the money-changers is a more appropriate response.

Forgiveness does not mean letting your brother be slain, and then buddying-up to his slayer. Sacrificing your voice to speak out against a bully for some free coffee and cookies - shame.

MH is a fucked establishment that brainwashes it's people so Driscoll can live off their earnings and lay to his wife like she were his twelve year old soccer-boy fantasy - while I like he idea of the movie, any support of that church, even attending a screening of a movie, is a no-no.
