"A former Rutgers student has been found guilty of hate crimes and of invading his roommate's privacy via webcam and Twitter messages. According to the Associated Press, a jury has convicted Dharun Ravi of all 15 counts against him, which include "bias intimidation" and invasion of privacy, putting him at risk of deportation to India or of possible prison time here in the US." Stupid college kid (SCK) plays a stupid practical joke on his roommate, and the roommate commits suicide. Whether you feel that this is an overreaction to a stupid prank or not, the kid is still dead. The state prosecutors offer SCK a sweetheart deal- take counseling and do community service, then it's water under the bridge, no courts, no jail time. SCK tries to fight it in court, loses and gets 10 years. I have to believe the judge tacked on 5 years because SCK is such a dumb ass.
I think it was a case where the line between "being an asshole on the internet" and "harmful invasion of privacy" became blurred for the convicted.
The internet, for many young people, is an anything goes battlefield, where the highest form of comedy is doing or saying the most reprehensible thing imaginable at a given time.
In his pursuit of "teh lulz", the convicted forgot that "U MAD BRO" doesn't work in real life, where real feelings and injured individuals are involved. I think that all charges of malicious mischief and harassment are involved were indeed warranted, though nothing to do with the direct loss of life is necessary.
