Well, first of all, voters turned down charters three times. But I was very happy for him to come out and say no to charters. He is doing EXACTLY what should happen:
-duplicate and expand innovations throughout the state
- more early childhood education
- full-day kindergarten paid for (he calls it "kindygarten", cute)
Yes, he got asked about the costs for the special election and said there were thousands of people out of work and he wanted to work towards a better economy for them. Basically, he ignored the costs question but the answer was fine.

According to this White House Tax Receipt generator of my 2011 Federal Income Taxes $700 went to the pentagon and only $100 went to Dept of Edu. :(

Had he done so, the special election couldn't have been an add-on to the already-scheduled primary and general election. The controlling legislation is RCW 29A.28.041(3):
(3) If the vacancy occurs less than eight months before a state general election and before the close of the filing period for that general election, the special primary, special vacancy election, and minor party and independent candidate nominating conventions must be held in concert with the state primary and state general election in that year.Thus, had Inslee resigned earlier, it surely would have cost more -- probably much more -- than whatever will eventually be the price tag for the piggy-backed special election. So you should be thanking Jay for saving the state and the counties some serious change. And also for cutting down on all the paper and envelopes that a separate election would have required.

Inslee probably enjoyed having Macfarlane on stage with him as much as having a piranha in his pants. The "do it for the kids" Reformer has 2 facial expressions: "sucking on lemons and sucking on rotten lemons." She makes the union's charm quotient go up just by proximity. Not an easy feat.

It's a nice idea, but I doubt it's going to happen without new revenue. You can only cut current teachers salaries so much, while expecting them to do more work. ("New efficiencies" from "lean management" will undoubtedly simply dump managerial duties from existing administrators onto teachers.)
We NEED to implement a state income tax. This is never going to happen, so we're GOING to just kind of sit back and watch while government services crumble around us.

Suggesting that there is any causal relationship between state funded preschool (because they do the other 12 years SO well!) and decreased incarceration levels is as intellectually sound as suggesting there's a connection between teaching evolution and teen pregnancy.
All of this talk of funding, of universal preschool, of charter schools (pro-choice should apply to more than just abortion) is not going to change anything. Moving away from grades, tests, and arbitrary curricula, while empowering individual students to have a voice in their education is the only real way to improve education. Everything else is just theater.
