One time I lined my personal collection of DVDs up by my preferred genres and separated them. It turns out romantic comedies/romances/stereotypical fluff movies are almost all in white or very light colored boxes/covers and everything else is in standard black casing.
I always wondered how that plays into renting and purchasing as I had not previously noted it and everyone who looked at my movies hadn't noticed it before either.
Well...I dunno. I actually think there is plenty of "muted assumptions" in our society that are quite literally imbued into people's psyches through repetition, media and so on.
I know this because I've often championed ideas and causes which were not part of these assumptions.
For example I was advocating Linux back in 2004-5. I remember then that trying to explain to people that yes, you could have an operating system on a PC other than Windows was completely incomprehensible. In fact, some of these people would begin to get flustered or red, and well up in a kind of horror mixed with anger that I could challenge this assumption.
Well not we have iPhones and Android phones that we use more than PCs with operating systems other than Windows, and Linux runs most of the Internet and is starting to catch on in ultrabooks like the ASUS transformer.
Also, I think if you look back at my posts here, it's pretty much a laundry list of things that people consider "inarguable" even if evidence is provided in the form of links to data.
Just think back to 2007. Now imagine saying to someone that you think housing prices in Seattle would stop going up and might fall a bit. How would the other person react? Or the next time you're at a party with some fellow Sloggers, say something like "hey, you know some times I think cars are actually better than most public transportation". Please...record your reactions on camera if possible...
Good god, Subliminal Seduction was a load of hooey. Ritz crackers say "SEX" on them; magazine ads look like penises when you hold them up to the light so the ad on the other side of the page shows through. Rock albums have backwards satanic messages on them. Garbage on a par with Erich von Däniken. I hope this guy is better than that.
I remember reading "Subliminal Seduction" back in the 1960s in elementary school. Our 6th grade teacher was really cool and she would introduce current topics like McLuhanism in the form of what-if discussions ("what if there were no letters").
