It seems to me the Obama campaign has had success in taking positions that force the republican party to over-react to them in an unflattering manner. I can only imagine this is part of that(?)

A lot of people in this country don't support gay marriage but at least as many would probably react negatively to outright displays of homophobia and religion fueled anger.
