what? "extending many of the same rights granted to married couples" but he's not a supporter of "civil unions"? so Mittens, what *are* you going to call it?

If you're not willing to apply for all your rights piece-meal, you shouldn't decide to be attracted to people of your own sex.

This is going to be a watershed year in American politics...

Rmoney is throwing a bone to his base, while Obama is addressing the entire nation and asking America, in essence, do you want to come on into the 21st century and align yourself with most of the rest of the world and be on the right side, the correct side of history, or do you want your fears and prejudices to continue to hobble this country and its citizens as you try desperately to cling to an idealized past that never was?

And the fulcrum for this question is, amazingly, marriage equality.

This is going to be fascinating...

Segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever, according to Romney:

"My view is that marriage is a relationship between a man and a woman," Romney said. "That's the position I've had for some time, and I don't intend to make any adjustments at this point. ... Or ever, by the way."

Congratulation Mitt Romney.

Hold your course. Don't let the petty demands and inevitable vicious personal attacks you'll face from a preternaturally entitled self selecting minority make you betray the rest of this great nation.

On the day that our president declared war on marriage and family, you stand behind them. Thank you.

In what way does offering full marital rights to same-sex couples constitute "war," or a threat of any kind, to marriage and family? Please be specific (for a change).

What Proteus said. Mittens need look back only three generations in his own family to find a different definition of marriage:
[George] Romney's grandparents [Mitt's great-grandparents] were polygamous Mormons who fled the United States [for Mexico] with their children owing to the federal government's prosecution of polygamy.

@12 - Not only that, but there will be a whole record of the attempts to engage him in dialogue on the matter, and his refusal to so engage, illustrating the degree to which he and his ilk actually oppose civic participation, compromise, and, by extension, republican (in the non-partisan, non-repugnant sense, as in "of or regarding the operation of a republic") democracy.

Or, you know, he could prove me wrong, this one time.

"Preternaturally entitled" sounds a lot like how I would describe people who want to keep the entire concept of marriage all to themselves even though there is no conceivable gain in doing so, Sb. Like the little kid who screams and sobs and thrashes on the floor just to keep the entire pack of Oreos to himself, even though he'll be sick if he eats even half of them.

So exactly what federal rights are gays not good enough for, if "hospital visits and such" are okay, but civil unions that are otherwise equal to "Marriage" are not?

How I wish some mainstream reporter actually had the gumption to ask Mitt to list all the other rights he thinks the humble homosexual doesn't deserve.

Are you trying to remind us how Romney, coward that he is, avoided serving his country in Vietnam by getting a deferment so he could be a Mormon missionary in France and live in a palace for two years?

And that he received his deferment only two months after protesting IN FAVOR of the draft?

If so, good job!

I'm sure that this has been planned for some time. (And polled in a lot of swing states.)

It's no coincidence that Biden and Arne "came out" for this the weekend before the looming disaster in NC, where the people of NC, in their infinite wisdom, voted to enshrine constitutional bans on, not only gay marriage, but also civil unions AND domestic partnernerships, INCLUDING those for straight couples.

Guess what? According to Wikipedia, "228,000 North Carolina couples in domestic partnerships and 12 percent of those were same-sex couples."

OOPS!

I betcha there is going to be a lot of pissed off people when they discover that their domestic partnerships are no longer valid.

Also, the positions of Obama and Romney are now starkly different:

Obama's position is clear -- he's personally for marriage equality but believes that it should be left up to individual states. (States Rights!)

Romney's position is confused -- he says that he supports "hospital visitation rights and the like" but not "civil unions, if they're identical to marriage other than by name." Huh? WTF!

Romney also is against state's rights because he wants a constitutional amendment banning same sex marriage. He would overrule the states of MA, IA, NH, VT, NY, DC, CT and, possibly, WA, ME and MD.

Later in the year, I wouldn't be surprised if the Obama campaign hammers Romney on this fact. (It could especially help Obama in "Live Free or Die" NH).

So now, Obama looks like a leader who makes strong decisions regardless of the political consequences.

Meanwhile, Romney takes a position which most Americans disagree with, plus he cannot verbalize coherently what his position actually is.

Romney's campaign again shows it is not ready for prime time.

I think this was a brilliantly executed TRAP:

I'm sorry, but the Republican tan has got to go. It looks terrible. It screams of living a life of luxury while the rest of the country slaves away to get by, or still can't. He's the most country-club looking presidential candidate I've ever seen. He looks like a guy who likes to take time away from the beach so he can fire people. That fake Republican tan is like his fake smile - it's trying too hard. Forget four years. I don't think I can stand four more months of him. He actually makes me miss John McCain. At least McCain knew something about hardship. Mitt Romney knows something about eating cheese in France.

And those of you predicting that Romney will take credit for gay marriage once it's accepted: Based on past history, the only thing Mitt Romney won't take credit for is any time he screwed up.

@36,

Good call on the tan thing. It's freaking bizarre honestly. But given the calculated nature of each and every single thing a politician does, it seems only logical that they've determined it's somehow a net positive. If every single tanning bed on the planet were to spontaneously explode during peak tanning hours tomorrow evening (or whenever the fuck peak tanning hours are) the world be a considerably better place for it.

At least he's honest. This was a big, built up show to solidify the left by Obama, and he actually, in the end, said he would do less for the cause of gay marriage than Romney just did (pay attention...it was his personal view, and he's leaving it up to the states...just like he left cannabis legislation up to the states with his stormtroopers constantly raiding cannabis dispensaries).

Romney's a dick, but at least he's the kind of dick who lets you know he's a dick. It's infinitely better than the alternative (sneak attack...donkey punch...and then you wake up with a dirty sanchez)

We'd like for homoliberals to explain how legalizing homosexual "marriage" is not Humanist Sharia Law.
What does the legalization of same-sex marriage actually change for anyone but same-sex couples? "Sharia Law"--both in actual practice and in the symbolic context in which it's currently being discussed--inhibits behavior of citizens according to the moral dictates of ostensibly revealed text. I fail to see where anyone's activity or belief is inhibited whatsoever by the allowance of gay marriage, since you will be at liberty to disapprove in precisely the same degree that you are at liberty to do so now.

Well, the bones of it- Back when schools were there to teach kids academics that is.

(Though to be honest, I only wanted to learn it to impress girls, which didn't work as it happened. Nor did the British sports car, since any car a high school kid can afford with a Lucas electrical system stops for repairs about as often as for fuel. Fun to drive though, especially while speaking mangled and entirely unneccessary French to the poor girl stuck in the passenger seat trying to hear U2 or REM on the Sparkomatic stereo and ignore the idiot driving. Nevertheless, I learned how to repair cars and how entirely brainless a teenage boy is when girls are around and got some limited practice in French. So a net gain, I guess.)

Now all a kid learns in school is how to be tolerant and diverse. Oh, I suppose they also learn how to whine about bullies rather than doing something about them after school. And I guess they learn how a cake knife brought to cut a cake the kid brought for everyone is a deadly weapon meriting the childs suspension. So far as I can tell, the feeling is that they can learn the academics later. Right now the primary objective is far left brainwashing.

Kind of why my kids go to private school really.
