I've re-read this a half dozen time and can't figure out why--aside from the linkbaity title--this article is so controversial. How is it surprising that a twenty-year-old doesn't see the value in album packaging and dreams of a digital music celestial jukebox model where artists get paid?

Maybe the most egregious part is where she admits to having "borrowed" her whole music collection from her college radio station?

What 15 CDs will Emily White take to her desert island?! Anyone want to guess?

@1 because some people think that they have a monopoly on what other people do with their computers.

@1: I don't get the fuss either. I imagine most teenagers and young adults would say the same thing if you asked them honestly. It seems like she bought quite a lot of that music.

Keep your money. You have more pressing things to spend it on than my music. Just don't give me the stinkeye when I get mine by own money by selling a song to Ford.

It's causing a fuss because the business of selling music is still in a tailspin years after the internet has shaken things up. There's opportunity in the lurch to mold music sales into something that's convenient for the TSARY and still compensates musicians and folks in the industry. Hence, discussion.

If only the freeloaders knew how many of their favorite musicians actually put a roof over their heads by being instrument instructors, bartenders, and checkers at Whole Foods.

@7:
"On a personal level, I have witnessed the impoverishment of many critically acclaimed but marginally commercial artists. In particular, two dear friends: Mark Linkous (Sparklehorse) and Vic Chestnutt. Both of these artists, despite growing global popularity, saw their incomes collapse in the last decade. There is no other explanation except for the fact that “fans” made the unethical choice to take their music without compensating these artists.

Shortly before Christmas 2009, Vic took his life. He was my neighbor, and I was there as they put him in the ambulance. On March 6th, 2010, Mark Linkous shot himself in the heart."

TL;DR Emily, you killed Vic Chestnutt and Sparklehorse by using Kazaa when you were in middle school.

this still doesn't answer my long-burning question of whether I should feel guilty for downloading out-of-print, unavailable except on eBay or Discogs, obscure punk records? Crossed Out is not gonna see the $100 you payed for their 7".

As monumental a role as musicians and albums have played in my life, I've never invested money in them aside from concert tickets and t-shirts.

I don't think she's bought any of her music.

@11:
She does say "But I didn't illegally download (most) of my songs.", though I'm not sure exactly what that is supposed to mean. Maybe she did steal everything and is building some kind of mental difference between downloading from the internet and ripping CDs that she didn't buy, which is arguably the same thing.

Especially the first line. And then think about it before the next time you get you all worked up.

@12: David Clowery contacted NPR and asked for clarification: Altogether she's bought 15 CDs worth of music, the rest was copied off friends, family, and when she worked at that radio station and snuck albums home for ripping.
